Watch the interview before trying to contribute to this thread. He went to Europe because it has the best 'string of races available'. He also is in these races to ride 'the pain train'. Get with the program here and we can have an actual educated discussion here, sir.

The case is CLOSED, thank you. Running slower than 4:40 pace is not going to get anyone prepped for an elite 1500m-10k race on the track. It explains why he isn't burning the track up like last year. He is dedicated to the marathon and has been training for it. So if anymore idiots want to ask the same stupid question of 'why isn't he running as fast as last year' THEN WATCH THE INTERVIEW.

Since "Tyson Gay ran 10.04 seconds in pouring rain to win the 100 meters in Paris"...i don't think Solinskly would be happy with a 2:12 marathon debut!

Tell that to Mark Nenow, he ran 27:22 with nothing faster than 4:40 pace in training.Also, typical way current Americans train for the marathon...by running slower in training.

Right, he really needs to go to Europe for a "string of races" when he's got the same fitness of top US HS boys.

What he needs is a good long trip to Everest Base Camp on a diet of about 1000 calories a day. He's lying to himself if he thinks he can compete at that weight.

I understand the injury he went through was terrible, and for most people, probably career ending, but don't forget that he also ran 3:42, and 13:23 last year, a year after missing the entire season.

If he's truly gearing up for a marathon, I wouldn't expect him to run as fast as his season bests for 2013, but after improving his 1500 back to 3:46, I would have thought his 5k would have been a little better... but, I don't know, he's improving each race, which gives me some optimism that whatever it is he's doing, it's good for him.

Jerry and co. are extremely organised and very planned out. If Chris is over there doing what he says, and why would he lie, or better yet, why would he put himself through it, it's for a purpose. Solinsky was always a guy who benefited from racing a lot, so maybe that's what he's doing, just kind of racing into shape, so he can get into shape.

A lot of Jerry's guys move over to Europe for quite some time in the summer. I'd assume he just wanted to go along and get in some racing and training away from the states. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I think Chris realizes his chances of success on the track are slim to none, so I don't blame him to shift to the longer stuff. I'm going to reserve judgement until he actually runs a marathon.

I understand that. Now understand me. 'Faster than 4:40 pace' six weeks ago puts that on June 8th, a week before his 29:00 10k. He was in no way prepping specifically for a track 5k or 10k by delaying any sort of speed workouts a week before his 2014 track debut. If he was going to focus on running 1500m-10,000m on the track than he would be running faster than 4:40 pace quite a bit earlier than six weeks.

Educate yourself, learn a little bit before trying to commentate.

here's What doesn't make sense to me. why is he worse at the 5k vs 1500 relative to last year? shouldn't it be the opposite?

I'm rooting for him, but I do think he's done...sadly.

So? I didn´t say that his training has been optimum for track races, but 13.50 is still slow for him. He should be at much better 5k level to be able to run closer to his limits in the marathon. Especially knowing the fact that this wasn´t his first track race in this summer.

The first time I saw Chris run in person was at Nationals last year. As everyone knows, he ran the 5k. Even taking his injury history into consideration, and the knowledge that he was on the comeback trail, I was still totally shocked at how giant and out of place he looked. It seriously looked like an NFL tight end had wandered onto the track. He was just kind of lumbering along, looking totally miserable. The crowd was very supportive, which was great, but I couldn't escape the feeling that the guy was not supposed to be a long distance runner.

Oh come on. He's run a 3k, a 5k and two 1500s over the past few weeks. He's clearly been trying to get run some fast track times and has no excuse for being 30 seconds than he was last year. He's moving backwards and it doesn't look like he's ever going to be world class again. I don't know how anyone who's followed his career can deny that. I've been a big Solinsky fan ever since I watched him crush the field in the NCAA 5k with a 4:01 last 1600 back in 2006. He's had an amazing career and it would be awesome if he could get back to even a fraction of what he used to be, but the odds are looking slimmer and slimmer.

I'll admit my sense of time when he started running faster than 4:40 and the European circuit was off.

It is not absolutely imperative for him to run a fast 5k for him to have a successful marathon. Sure, Ritz ran a good marathon several weeks (and months) AFTER running a marathon. That is a lot easier to do considering the giant base that marathon training gives you. I wouldn't be to surprised if Chris ran a spring marathon and comes back next year with a REAL track focus and begins to destroy the track again. I can almost guarantee that will happen.

I suggest you learn a little bit about training methods and focuses before trying to judge an athletes current ability. 13:50 isn't to bad for a marathon build up.

I would actually deny the fact that he is moving backwards. You, just like 'renewed marathoner', need to understand that Solinsky is not moving backwards. Sure he isn't in sub 13 shape, nor has he ran faster than his times from last year but that is because he is moving FORWARD and focusing on a different event ENTIRELY. With a changed focus comes a change training regime, no track stuff. He was in Europe to try and get some more racing experience. He was away from competition to long the past three years and needed to get his competitive spirit back. That is the ONLY reason he went to Europe. Not to run some wicked fast time, but to get a wicked sharp mental edge.

I am not sure ANY of you guys understand much of this sport. You keep arguing that Solinsky is DONE but he has more in store!

What everyone here needs to understand is that not everyone has the same baseline weight for a given height. One 6' guy might bottom out at 145 lbs while another might be 165. Genetics. Starving himself isn't gonna do squat for performance, the guy is as lean as they come and looked the exact SAME when he ran 26:59 and sub-13 three times over the course of summer 2010. In fact, he may be leaner now than he was in 2010 and the fluctuation in weight (loss) since the '08 trials may be a huge part of the problem. Fighting a failing endocrine system is a losing battle no matter how you slice it, i.e. Galen Rupp circa 2006.

although you're being rude, I'll clarify for the sake of intelligent discussion.

ok he's focusing on marathon, I have no problem with that, or any problem with his 1500 or 5k being a bit slower than last year(although I wish they weren't)

but here's the problem. he got much worse over 5k relative to how much he's slowed down at 1500 compared to last year. to me that's troubling. perhaps he has a 1335-1345 in him, if so then great I think he's on track. but he hasn't shown that ability yet.

I know my point makes sense, as do most people reading this thread. There's no reason for you to be childish.

Regardless, I am calling you out on your prediction. Put your money where your mouth is. Make a specific, concrete prediction on how he will "destroy the track again."

random aside does it seem like his stride rate is really low now? he seems to be bounding.
