Solinsky 8:00.46 in Belgium today

He was nitpicking at your obvious hyperbole, trialswatcher. Not helpful nitpicking, but all he's saying is that you were exaggerating. Solinsky was one of the greatest high schoolers of all time and you just wrote that his high school PR was the equivalent of a 3000 ~5 seconds slower than he just ran. So obviously this is at least as good as top level high school stuff. Is it where he should be 2.5 years after an injury and a year after running 13:23? No, not even close. So I'm not arguing with you there; just trying to close down a discussion derailment.

McDougal worked so hard his body stopped responding. Solinsky worked so hard he ripped one of his hamstring muscles off his body.

he is almost unrecognizable because of how ridiculously scrawny he looks. Compared to Chris Solinsky in the past he is tiny. Want to know the probably reason for this? BECAUSE he is training for a FALL MARATHON. He is only in Belgium to get his racing mentality back. Want to know why he isn't running 13:20s again this year? Because he isn't doing track work. What good would 13:20 do him at USAs? He'd be just another guy getting dropped. He is 100% committed to the marathon and I guarentee that is why he is running only 8:00 3ks.

Personally, I thought he looked tiny because he was so far behind the leaders. Get it? ... like a perspective thing. Because he was so far back. ... He looked small-ish, compared with the guys who were in the main pack. They looked big. Or maybe not big, but just normal. Normal guys running 4 minute miles. Compared to them, he looked... kinda small. Cuz he was running 4:10. But ya, maybe he just lost some weight. Slow carb diet kinda thing. Either way I definitely see him totally ripping it up at a fall marathon. Maybe like Marine Corps or Philly should definitely be in his ball park. I mean, considering how fit and scrawny he looks, he might be a factor in a race like Toronto if everything goes perfect.

He is out there, but he is out there running poorly. People are talking about it because he was so good at one time, and they would like to see him get back to that level. But with results like these there is almost no way he is going to be a factor in any domestic or international competitions. For God's sake, he's 6 seconds ahead of what Jager does for 3,000 meters with 28 barriers and 7 water jumps.

He was far too big before to be able to do what he did cleanly. There used to be a thread about BMI vs speed, I think it was Sprintgeezer's. Solinsky was off the charts.

As others have mentioned, I'm just confused why he has gotten so much slower in the last year. He ran 13:20s last year. One would think barring setbacks, someone of his pedigree should have been back to inside 13:10 this year with a goal of sub 13:00 in 2015 and an Olympic run in the 5 or 10 in 2016. His 13:23 was very encouraging and seemed to set him up for such a progression. Instead, he has regressed. I think that is what people are having a hard time with and I would love to hear what chris has to say about it.

Instead of being pumped that he could he back to 13:20, it seems like it threw him off. Which is strange. That should have been a great springboard for this non-championship year.

Seems like too much negativity and age excuses out of the Schumacher camp.

Also, might he fare much, much, MUCH better in a cooler fall marathon or half than these results would indicate?

I think the major reason for the decrease in times is due to him changing to the marathon. He isn't really doing any shorter speed workouts. He is mainly working on endurance based workouts for a fall marathon. Sure he ran a 13:20 and that is a great time all things considered, but I am sure he got a drastic pay cut from Nike for running a 'subpar' time. He has mentioned a million times that he is having a hard time with 5k speed workouts, so he is moving up to the marathon. If he runs a decent marathon he will get some cash and build up a nice base. I expect next year for him to focus once again on the track for the 10k. Hopefully the marathon will give him a big enough base that all he needs is some 5k/10k styled speed workouts and he will be rocking again.

He has not 'regressed' just changed his focus. I will also mention this again... He has his hamstring ripped off. I'd imagine that:

1. He is going to be more cautious.

2. He isn't going to be able to 'springboard' back as easily.

3. He has a lot of work to do to catch up. Give him some time.

BECAUSE HE IS RUNNING MILEAGE AND NOT DOING SPEEDWORK LIKE HE USED TO.

He had been running +100miles a week since his senior year of high school. Everything clicked right in 2010. Drugs had nothing to do with it. Sprintgeezer is comparing his not so elite self to a professional runner. His stats are irrelevant and prove nothing.

I'm not overly concerned that he isn't running that fast on the track.

I think people also forget how many years of consistent, injury free running it took him to run those times to begin with. Solinsky was never a barn burning running. He wasn't a guy with blazing turnover or with natural speed. He's a grinder. He never had a breakout year, he just got consistently better step by step by never getting injured.

Few guys who are sub 13 caliber ever make it back to that sharp of racing shape after a mid level injury, better yet a potential career-ender. In fact, I'd be way more shocked if he was blitzing sub 13:10's right now than I am at him running a 3:51.

Ryan Hall pretty much dropped off the map on the track when he switched to marathons, even his half's weren't very good in marathon build ups.

I'm going to stay optimistic for Solinsky. If comes out and runs 2:12 for a debut, I think that would be pretty solid.
