Abbey D'agostino NOT Running 5k Tonight, Taking a Break from Racing, Will Next Gear Up for Making World Cross

LRC's Rojo spoke to Mark Coogan, coach of 7 time NCAA Champ Abbey D'Agostino, who just signed a big deal with New Balance. Abbey is not going to run tonight's 5000m at USATFs. Mark said Abbey has been feeling tired, and did not feel she was capable of breaking 15 minutes. The decision was made for Abbey to take a break (up to a month) and then start gearing up for the fall and 2015 where the emphasis will be on World Cross Country and making the US team on the track for the World Championships in Beijing. agree with earlier poster that she looked tired at NCAAs.

Nice to see she is not be subjected to questions about her ducking competition, Not being good enough, Too much attention on her (actually there's been a bit of this one), etc.

She's had a great collegiate career and look forward to her competing professionally at a national level next fall and next year.

Something was clearly wrong at NCAA's, prior to her signing, because that just was not the same dominant athlete from previous champs. So, she is right to take a break now after three long seasons. Sometimes you have to take the long-term approach, get a substantial rest, a long buildup through the fall and winter, and then with a huge base, get in a strong world xc race and a successful outdoor campaign.

Makes total sense-- she needs a break! Dartmouth had her racing all the time. At Heps, she tripled and ran the 3k, 5k, 10k and then she peaked for regionals and just seemed exhausted at nationals. A lot of racing this year between indoors and outdoors.
