the fix is on. Germany mysteriousely slipping or flubbing during every clear opportunity.

Nope, just scored...
Even uglier than I expected. Some "Group of Death".
I don't know why I bothered to watch this game. USA looked like a bunch of p&ssies
F*ck u bro. The USA is getting better
US will advance since Portugal has beaten Ghana.
The arithmetic of tallying points and goals is pretty straightforward but I'm not at all surprised that the "soccer is boring" crowd are struggling with it.
OOoh teenager got mad. I enjoyed the Portugal vs USA game, but this was like watching Washington State play Alabama in football. They got worked over from start to finish. US couldn't keep the ball, couldn't get close to the goal, and our best players were exposed as incompetent. Wake me up when the US can win a quality match.

You clearly don't know anything about soccer or didn't watch the game if that was your takeaway from US v Portugal.

I think fdfasdf was referring to the USA v Germany match in his demands for a quality win. Don't worry about him, best to leave him and his kind behind.
USA!USA!USA!
The US did not look good once again. This was a lot like the Ghana game between Dempsey's goal and Ghana's equalizer. The U.S. sat back, did not take advantage of its opportunities, and let Germany pound the box. We could have lost 3-0. The refereeing was awful, against the U.S., but I'd like to see us actually attempt to win the next game, the knockout game, probably against Belgium, unless we luck out and get Algeria. If we win that game, we'll likely be facing Argentina and if there is a miracle, then probably the Netherlands, so the road does not get easier.

I'm American, and I never believed this was the 'Group of Death'. Going into the tourney, one would've expected Germany and Portugal to advance. USA and Ghana are decent enough and can be dangerous, but neither is a team you'd expect to be in the final 16 before the group pairings.
This was actually not a bad showing by the USA. They played exactly the type of ugly game a heavy underdog must play in order to win. Germany had many more chances and were unlucky several times, but the only ball that actually went in was a tremendously difficult shot. That's all you can hope for from the USA side against Germany. USA also had 2 or 3 very good chances to score. They get one those shots in the net, and we'd have seen a classic undeserved tie. The win against Ghana was undeserved as well, but USA got their two great chances in the net.
The guy who had the golden opportunity at the end was our weakest player on the field, and that shot perfectly characterized the USA talent level. USA doesn't have a passable outside midfielder with Jones in the middle and Johnson on defense. (I'd love to see JK say with a straight face that he'd rather have Bedoya taking that shot in extra time than Donovan.) One or two breaks the other way and the US ties or wins this game.
USA is going to have an outside shot against Belgium if the defense again plays like it did today. I'm not confident USA can get more than a single goal as Dempsey is the only true scoring threat USA has on offense right now. I think they should play Yedlin at least 45' on the wing and consider moving Johnson up to outside midfield very early in the second half if they need a goal.
They got worked over from start to finish...The score indicates otherwise. They defended well.
The US team looked tired, which is how every team that has played in Manaus has looked in their subsequent match. Portugal didn't look good in their match either so it's fortunate that Ghana basically beat themselves today.
The Germans only showed in glimpses what they can do. It was clear that they had a couple more gears but they didn't need to burn more energy that just enough to prove that they weren't playing to a mutually beneficial draw.
Bottom line, the two best teams in the group advance and in the right order. On to the playoffs.

Right, because the final score always mirrors the flow of the game in soccer, eh?
If this were an American football game, Germany wins 30-7 while holding the US to less than 150 yards. I give the US 7 because they did put together some decent runs here and there.
And here I was getting my hopes up watching the US handle Portugal, but all it takes is a decent team to show us where we stand. Up and coming but not there yet.

The US team looked tired?
I disagree. The US team was pretty aggressive about chasing balls and challenging hard in the midfield.
It looked like the classic approach of an under-skilled team to try to make the game about fitness rather than skill.
No, they weren't as sharp as in the previous games. Perhaps it's that the Germans were just a little quicker on the ball than Ghana or Portugal, but it seemed like there were more mistakes out there today and not quite the same intensity in the duels, etc. That was my impression during the game, anyway.
The USA played terrible and were lucky not to lose 5-0.

Decent?! Germany isn't some mid-level side! If the tournament were being played outside South America, they'd be the clear favorites. This game proved Klinsmann was right about the US chances to win it all, but if you look at the final 16 it's also pretty clear that the US is not out of place in the knoc out round and that, while they're not a top 4 team either, probably, making it to the quarter's is not out of the question.

To my casual fan eye, the bracket for the knockout stage looks like it ended up unbalanced with four legit heavyweights - Brazil, Colombia, France, Germany - on one side and a lot of potential for chaos on the other side if Holland or Argentina underperform. I'm rooting for Costa Rica to make it all the way to the final. There's nothing saying the US couldn't get lucky against Belgium and even against the winner of Argentina - Switzerland [which have both looked pretty inconsistent.] Can't really imagine they'd make it all the way to the final, but if Holland loses to Mexico - stranger things have happened - and Costa Rica makes it to the semis, could a Cindarella US squad beat Costa Rica to make the final? Why not.
