Komen is actually 3 years younger than Geb and Geb still outlasted him by about 14 years. He had a about a 3 year window at the top and Geb completely burned him out and he was never heard from again.

At the time Aouita ran 27:26, the WR was 27:13, and it was a very big deal to run under 27:30. I believe Aouita was ranked #1 in the world that year in 10000m.

Aouita would have made short work of the 10000m WR if he hadn't been more interested in the shorter distances. He had no competition in long distances.

Aouita definitely has NOT confessed doping.

And the sentence about his 10000m is just laughable. At his first (and as it happened unfortunately only) try over 10000m he became the 6th fastes performer in historty, in the by far best debut at the time (a clear indication that he couldn't handle the distance). In a race in which he was badly spiked early be Alberto Cova. In a race where he ran very big parts between lane 1 and 2, easily some 60 (probably more) meters extra. He definitely was capable to break the WR on that day (which was 27:13,81), which he missed by 12,3s. In the field were included: World-, European and Olympic Champ Alberto Cova. WR holder Fernando Mamede. The next two European champs: Stefano Mei and Salvatore Antibo. The years fastest: Mark Nenow. The years fastest from next season: Francesco Panetta. Again a clear indication he couldn't handle the distance. For sure he was capable to break the record in 1987 (which he wanted to do) by some margin. For various reasons it didn't happen and in 1988 he concentrated also on the 800m. After his bronce in Seoul he was not anymore the same athlet (has lost a lot of his dedication). I don't want to give him credit for things he hasn't (but could have) done. Breaking the 10k record. Becoming Olympic 10k champ in 1992.

But to just state "he couldn't handle the distance" is not very honorable for someone who obviously has learned to use his head.

i watched it at the time, but didn't notice extra distance

that woud make him ~ 27'15 with uneven pace + bloody foot

certainly below 27'10 at even pace/uninjured

of course, both times, those 2 wouda known they had to run hard races from gun to "break" aouita as maybe little sprint chance

Australian steeplechaser Melissa Rollison alleges the Moroccan Olympic 5,000m champion suggested she take human growth hormone (HGH).

Rollison’s claims follow that of another Australian athlete Mark Fountain, who made drug allegations against Aouita in 2004 in a letter to the government-funded Australian Sports Commission (ASC).

Aouita’s two-year reign as Australia’s distance running coach ended the same year and he has not subsequently returned to Australia.

The 2004 claims were investigated by the ASC, Athletics Australia (AA) and the Australian Institute of Sport but Aouita was cleared of any doping links.

AA chief executive Danny Corcoran said the latest Rollison allegations had been referred to the ASC for investigation.

Corcoran said Rollison’s claims were “simply allegations which may be difficult to verify”.

Rollison said her 18 months as an athlete under Aouita were a nightmare, saying he recommended she take human growth hormone at a US training camp in 2003.

“He talked about it every day,” Rollison told Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper yesterday. “We had to go to America because that is where you get HGH.

“I said right at the start that I wasn’t interested and he said ‘everyone else is on it, so why wouldn’t you want to do it?’ I said I wanted to make it the proper way but he then tried to convince me HGH wasn’t illegal.”

Aouita was recently appointed an adviser to Qatar’s Academy for Sporting Excellenc based in Doha. – AFP

Other than confessed doper Aouita, the only man ever to do it is Augustine Choge, who is still only 27 years old.

These are all impressive times but not really worthwhile landmarks in comparison to Komen's times. sub 13 doesn't begin to touch 12:39 and sub 7:30 is nowhere near 7:20.

I heard El G ran 1:43 in practice on time, but that may just be a rumor, and he might have had a running start.

That said, he did manage a 1:46.70 last 800m in the 2004 Olympic 1500m final (2:01 first 800 I believe).

The simple fact that Komen's career was very short (what, about 2 years?) leads me to believe he is the more talented athlete as far as times go, since El G started at age 15 or so.

Geb burned him out? Geb beat him one time, for a career 1:1 record, and Komen responded by comfortably breaking Geb's WR (which he effectively had Komen pace him to) within a week. El G beat Komen over 1500m/mile more than Geb beat him, over any distance. But El G never touched, or came close to, Komen's times over 3000m, 2 miles or 5000m.

Geb had a great career, but he wasn't the 1500m/3000m runner that Komen was. And I'd give Komen the nod at 5000m, too.
