This was a beautiful race to watch. She took it out fast because she wanted the record. It was exciting to watch her get caught and then battle it out and win in the end. I couldn't stay seated. Looking forward to what this girl can do in college for sure. She was seeded with 9:58.
Considering all the metric/yards variations, Knights stands at fourth all-time, after Cain, Efraimson and Mortenson. She could have passed up Mortenson in a less windy race with more rational pace. A 66 opener and 79 6th lap is pretty insane in terms of trying to run a fast overall time, under the best of conditions, much less leading that much in the wind.
Like many others, I have strong doubts over the long -term, I hope I'm wrong.
On the other hand, DiBlalsi seems like the real deal to me. She PRd by over 17 seconds!

Knights is capable of much faster, and I hope she's able to keep progressing at Cal.
I figured DiBalsi could break 10, based on her front running two weeks ago. She changed her tactics for the race yesterday and it paid off big time.

OK, after checking, it was a 14-second PR since her 10:09 last week, but an 18 second improvement in her last two races. Just about as phenomenal. It looked like she ran a decent negative split- smart race, just ran out of steam the last 100 in the face of Knights' incredible last-minute resurrection.Too bad Baxter couldn't have been in this one.

I agree. Dibalsi is the more impressive runner. There are girl runners that are naturally small and then there are girl runners who starve themselves to try to be small. The former type always has the advantage.
Dibalsi has great form and is naturally tiny. Knights is bigger and has gained weight since last yr.
Impressive race indeed.
DeBalsi has the upper hand given that she is naturally thinner, has a more fluid/elastic stride, and wasn't trying as hard as Knights. That's not to say DeBalsi didn't try her hardest, but there is more room for development in terms of handling a higher intensity mentally.
Knights almost looks like she is speed-walking in a way. I'm not sure what to make of that. On the one hand, it's clearly effective, but on the other it seems like her top-end speed is going to be limited.
3200m times shouldn't be converted up to 2Miles for records, it may seem rational that "they could've done this", but it's almost like giving a runner credit for something they didn't do (they didn't go the extra 18.68m), now I could kinda of see it the other way around because you actually at some points passed 3200m, and if there's cameras (sometimes there is), then it should be record eligible as well... All in all, I think they should be seperate so either way, Bethan Knights is your new girls 2 mile national record holder! Impressive record, because she took the record from Aisling Cuffe who just ran 15:11 5k this year, and that's not to say she will run 15:11 either, but just to put it into perspective, the credentials of the previous record holder... I hope to see her develop well at Cal, she has good potential, but I do agree that Hannah Debalsi has the most long term growth... I saw her run that gutsy 2 mile at New Balance Nationals, it was up to 95 degrees that day and somewhere in the 80's when she raced, so the heat adjustments and competition didn't surprise me that she ran 9:55 today and I think by senior year, she could be the equivalent of Cranny/Efraimson except in the 2 mile and not the 1500m...
Perhaps the next Paula Radcliffe?

Knights opened up quite a bit more in her final kick, so maybe her style is more enabling than limiting.
Just when I thought that Cain had cornered the market on awkward running form, along comes Knights and Feeny. Maybe they will be the future Radcliffes of America, but geez it is a relief to watch runners like Alexa, Dibalsi, Rainsberger et al.

That's ridiculous...she ran 9:53 on a track at a meet. Give her the damn credit, she ran an amazing race and a faster 2 mile than any high schoolers ever run. SOOO give her the national 2 mile record! And please stop talking about a teenage girls weight, she looks perfectly healthy. A lot of elite runners lost a bit of weight when they made that transition to elite status, when your running that much it happens.

+1 on all counts. Also like the screen name - guess "California uber alles" kind of fits the result.
I think the record will be counted, as the cones were set properly after the 4x mile relay.
