There is a whole other level of distance running ahead of him. The kid is good, but at 28:30 a lot (maybe quite a few) of guys can blast that fast.
Dumb discussion because the 10,000 is the easiest race to save a kick, and because in most competitive 10k's the kick starts earlier leaving nobody the opportunity to start a fresh sprint at 9800m.
If you can run the last 200 in 24.7, you ran the second to last 200 too slow. Graft Cheserek's finish into a world championship race and he'd be falling way back at the bell and then catching up a little bit.
Edmonton 2001...the Kenyan who beat Geb and other Ethiopian min 10k, ran sub 25secs i think or was it sub 24secs??? Forget his name and too lazy to look it up.
Charles Kamathi ran 23 point to win from Mezgebu. That has to be the fastest last 200 in sub 28min 10k nevermind sub 30.

I got 27:27.0 at 200m to go for Kamathi and then 27:53.26 for finish, putting him at :26.26 for final 200m.
I had forgotten about that race. Was that Geb's first defeat over 10,000m?

Wikipedia says that Bekele closed in 24 seconds in this race http://www.iaaf.org/news/news/sanchez-and-mutola-shine-in-wet-conditions-in for a 13:06.

Or to even make the Kenyan team, most likely. Although, they might be better off sending him than someone 20 seconds faster in the 10. If the race was slow/tactical, Ches would have a better chance than anyone else from Kenya.

Yes but that would be an opening 200m. Bolt presumably ran victory lap. so he split something like 19.19, 2:30, 2:30 for his 600 meters on the track. Mo could definitely take him at 600.

Very good point, Ches is world class and you cannot doubt what he will do in the future, but Rupp kicked a 52 off of 13:20 pace at the olympic trials, Mo Farah dominates the final 500 of every track race he is in. Ches will be as good or surpass that, but it is simply not his time.
Cheserek is starting to look like one of those generational talents.

That's so not true. If you look at equal effort races, you'll see faster closing laps the shorter the race, up until the 1500. The 800 is where that stops happening. But if you look at some of the videos already discussed, the fastest last lap comes from a 1500 where the winner closed under 50.

Yes...having reviewed the footage myself I got something similar when I timed it. Although, if you notice there are two white lines in succession with what looks like 200 to go...starting the clock at the first I get roughly the same time as you got...maybe the 200 to go mark is from the second white line???
The only reason I remember this race was because 1) it was the first time Geb lost at 10k in world champs and 2) the last 200 was very quick as I remember talking about it with my training buddies at the time.....But I still could be wrong.
