yeah, that was Hammond Indiana--Rudy Chapa, Carey Pinkowski, and Tim Keough.

Chapa also ran 28:32 for 10K in high school.

Since only ONE school in the history of H.S. track in this country has ever had 3 runners break 9min. I think this is a pretty big deal, Northpoint guy's..great MF job!

1964/ 1969 8:40 Lindgren (open competition) / 8:41 Prefontaine (solo)

Fernandez never ran a 3000m in high school. His 7:59 was his 3k split on his way to an 8:34

Rumor has it those kids are all running about 80 miles per week. Not knocking any of their performances but it will be interesting to see how much more they can improve while in high school.

OK, 2 boys broke 9:00 from the same team and neither of them won the race. What an incredible story this will make.

The storyline is three state records were broken in the Loucks 3200 meter race, (1) Maine State record (the winner), (2) Connecticut State record (2nd place), and (3) NY junior class record. A rather exceptional result for a track race in the Northeast.

Last fall in XC, Northport finished 2nd at NXN New York (16:10 team average) and La Salle finished 8th at NXN Northeast (16:49.8 team average) at the same course on the same day.

I don't even see how they could lose any HS XC meet. Incredible.

Haven't NPHS runners had a history of not doing much in college?

Those are quite impressive results, and looks like they've improved the most since last fall.

Northport probably won't fare too well next in cross country, surprisingly enough. They're graduating a ton of kids and even though they'll still have Mikey Brannigan, his next closest returning teammate runs around a minute and a half slower. Unless the kids behind Mikey REALLY pick it up, Northport will have a tough time beating Sachem North High School (in Lake Ronkonkama, NY) for their league title and county title (plus for a trip to the state championship). Brannigan will still be by far the best kid in Suffolk County and perhaps New York State but the gap between him and his teammates makes his team vulnerable.

Though, Northport is legendary for turning 18-minute 5k kids into 16-minute 5k kids so they're still the team to beat.

And on the topic of Northport kids in college, it's kinda the same situation as Fayetteville-Manlius. The kids have insane high school careers but in college they don't have much room to improve - they've been worked so hard and have improved so much already that they never really pan out. However all the Northport kids get into great schools so they're fine, and then again the chances of being a top D1 runner is incredibly slim.

You're right, that sounds better. Good story there.

Coming from someone who thinks 4 sub 10:20 returners elicits consideration as an NXN hopeful team, I sorta figured you'd appreciate La Salle's "story" here.

It's the potential in running, the "what could be" that makes a story. That's why we get excited about phenoms like Mary Cain. Maybe one day she can beat everyone, you know? In the meantime, there are women better than her that nobody wants to write about because they aren't as young.

That's also why Webb got offered a huge contract coming out of HS. It's the potential people get excited about. By the time he set the AR, nobody cared anymore.

I never said La Salle's race wasn't impressive. I simply suggested that there have been a few other teams that have had the talent to do that before, and that very few have had 3 sub-9 (and Northport nearly had that), or even 2 sub-9 (and Northport did accomplish that by a good margin).

Or, in other words: I'd rather focus on the story that actually was ("bird in hand"), rather than the potential story that MIGHT develop in the future ("two in the bush").

"Track Standards -

I'm posting the exactly calculated standard... but don't take these too strictly; if you're within a reasonable distance to the standard, you should be included (e.g. I'll include teams with runners at 10:20 3200m, 4:41 1600m, 4:37 1600m and 9:58 3200m).

These times MUST be run during THIS winter/spring/summer. Previous years marks will not be included.

5000m = 16:49.38

2 Mile = 10:23.86

3200m = 10:20.17

3000m = 9:37.65

1 Mile = 4:42.30

1600m = 4:40.62

1500m = 4:21.39

Note that I will use my own version of altitude adjustments, based on the what the NCAA had for their altitude adjustments a few years ago (how I calculate it is for a venue that is xx' above sea level, you'll get an xx.xx% adjustment to your time - PLEASE LET ME KNOW THE ACTUAL TIME AND ALTITUDE OF EVENT, correcting for altitude before you send in marks will only confuse me - I won't be able to confirm the results anywhere, or else I wouldn't be sure that I had already corrected for the altitude).
