CU has yet to lose a Pac-12s.
Stanford's team always looks legit on paper. They have a shot, but it's going to be a believe it when I see it kind of thing for me. Not only does CU have the depth, but Wetmore knows how to peak kids for XC and it's his main focus.
Saarel can probably be in the 13:30-35 range this year. I thought maybe 13:20-high prior to his race, but he might need a little more time. Either way, the Buffs have never been known for blazing times on the track.
I noticed. I also saw that Jack Keelan broke 14:00. Stanford is stacked.
Anyone notice that NAIA guy and Canadian Luc Bruchet won the race?
Also, former WVU runner, now back in Canada, Jessica o'connell went 15:13 in the women's 5 k
According to the gostanford.com writeup, McGorty now ranks 4th on the all-time American Jr. list, behind Fernandez, Derrick and Lindgren but now ahead of Rupp, Prefontaine, Virgin and a whole lot of others.
Regarding the redshirting, Miltenburg is redshirting all the frosh distance guys save Buttinger. Sophie Chase/top frosh distance girl is also redshirting. Likely to see all that are still Jr. eligible to compete at the US Jr. champs early July for spots on the World Jr. team a few weeks later in Eugene. McGorty and Keelen have pretty good chances to make that team . . . McGorty a great chance in both the 1500m and 5k since he just ran a 4:00.3+ mile a couple weekends ago.

Competing that deep into the summer usually isn't the best preparation for xc and this would seem to be Stanford's year to make a run at a title.

Strictly by 5000m times, it's Fernandez and Derrick and then McGorty.

What about Ritz? He ran under 13:30 as a freshman at CU
Ritz has a December birthday, so not a Jr. in his freshman year. Mark Davis won Mt. SAC in the 13:30's as a 19 year old, but turned 20 later that year.

Sanchez at 13:38 doesn't make my list, which is a freshman list, not a junior list. Ritz missed out on the junior records that year by a day or two, with a birthday of around 12/30.
Here are Marc Davis's year to year bests in that period:

McGorty and Saarel are going to end up having a great rivalry. The two rarely raced each other in high school (only the Dream Mile and Footlocker as far as I know), but they're in the same league in the NCAA and they're the best freshmen in the country aside from Cheserek, having made the transition from high school to college perfectly. Their best distances overlap (with McGorty PERHAPS having a slight edge in the 10k, and Saarel having a slight edge in the 1500 and the final kick) and I could see the two of them fighting each other for NCAA titles several times over the next few years.

Yes, he undoubtedly does but he's a sophomore in high school and has won only a single high-profile race. This thread is about collegiate athletes. He'll be in the NCAA soon enough.

Good look. In high school he was taking names left and right. 13:37 is 4:22 mile pace, and 8:45 was McGorty's 2 mile PR less than a year ago. Running 2mile PR pace for 3.1 miles....crazy improvememt
Anyone know McGorty's mileage in high school and now in college? I know for a fact that Saarel has only slightly increased from high school, 70 mpw to 75 mpw.
Hasn't McGorty always been better at this distance? If I remember correctly, he was the Footlocker guy & Saarel was the dream mile guy. Better luck in the 1500, Ben.

That's not really true. Neither are really speed guys; Saarel really just had a ton of strength and a crazy kick and that was enough for him to run 4:02 in high school. Both excelled at the 32 in high school and Saarel ran better altitude-adjusted times than McGorty. Probably Saarel is a 1500/5000 guy and McGorty a 5000/10000 guy but the 5k is in each of their wheelhouses.

True enough. Davis also has a December birthday and graduated high school a full year "younger" than Ritz. Davis was only 17 a few days when he ran that second fastest Balboa time over Todd Williams and the rest of the Footlocker field.
