don't pretend that's a normal sample. things are faster now but in my day, running 5:32 in 8th grade I was faster than most. We had a low 5 guy who won a lot and we saw one kid who ran in the 4:50s, I think. 4:44 puts you well above average for a male hs senior nationally. If you come from a power conference, you might not recognize that, but just look in the newspaper for city hs track results and you'll see that 4:44 would win most races.

Mary Cain's freshman 1500 record is 4:17 which is converted to 4:38 mile. Your girl has a shot at the record seeing that it is so early in the season!
Tho they didn't say how old she was. Maybe she is a 16 year old freshman? Another WVA phenom!
i ran 4:29 as a freshman, so to me it's below average.

That's what I ran as a freshman and only got to 4:30 (in a 4x1600 relay; in the open 1600 I only got to 4:32) by senior year, so doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot really. Every kid is different.
I know a kid who is a senior right now who ran 4:42 as an 8th grader and has only improved to 4:28.
Is 4:44 good if just looking at freshmen and not thinking of it as a stepping stone to better times? Yes. Is it indicative of anything great down the line? Nope.
I think it's a great time and shows a lot of potential. For reference purposes, mid-way through the outdoor season in my state the top 20 FR boys are at 4:39 and under. I don't have data past that point, but 4:44 isn't too far off.

And yes. Though there may be some (miniscule) fudging in there, I went from 4:42 to 3:59 (within a half second on either side) more than once from 9th to the end of college and beyond.
I do also know a 4:28 freshman who did absolutely nothing. Point is: you never know.

You should like answers like this, it was provably the best one. How should he know? Are you stupid? He said likely, maybe and probably not, those are words defining odds and pretty accurate. Doesn't mean he will break 4:30 or won't break 4:15, just means one is likely and one isn't. You're a major f'tard.

This is the right answer. The record at the junior high I went to was 4:45. It was set by a kid in 8th grade. After 5 more years of running, his PR was still 4:45. On the other hand, my friend went from 5:25 as a 9th grader (junior high) to 4:16 as a HS Senior. You just never know.

The answers on here are pretty solid. I broke 5 freshman year in XC (intra-squad meet)and ran 4:44 by the end of my freshman year. My sophomore year was pretty much a bust because I went from racing freshman to varsity, but junior year I ran 4:19. Senior year I lost my coach to a different school, and my training went to crap. I still managed to run 4:18 my senior year, but felt as though I could have run faster with better training. Depending on his speed, I should think sub-4:20 should definitely be in his sights. Just don't tell him that yet.
