He admits taking it back to June 1, 2011. His performances took a jump in 2010, so it's very possible the doping actually started then. That would be my guess.

Great point. Is there any more back story to this? I think these types of doping stories are fascinating as I think doping at the 'sub elite' level is way, way more common than people think.

I agree with this. It's one thing to be a 2nd/3rd tier elite professional runner where you might be getting by on prize money, and it's another to be a competitive hobbyjogger with a decent job and plenty of disposable income to spend on drugs. I have given this some thought myself, but really what am I really achieving by taking these things and jeopardizing my long term health? Is it going to get me from my 1:08 half to a OT qualifier? If so, is that really worth it?

Seems like the subelites who cheat are almost doing it purely (or at least 99%) for their ego since there is very little net economical gain, if at all, from spending a few hundred dollars a month on drugs.

You've got to be nuts to dope as a sub-elite unless you're a doctor/nurse or something. Who the hell wants to risk dying in his sleep just to run a 31:00 10k? I really don't think it's common at all, though it probably happens occasionally. The real doping is going on at the master's level, where there's an epidemic of "Low T" *cough* legal steroids *cough*.

are you suggesting that age group runners (male) are falsely

claiming low testosterone levels to get some hormone shot by their GP?

I'm saying they're getting testosterone, and people certainly know what to say to their docs if they want it. Whether they have clinically low T or not I've no idea, but it's banned regardless.

they're not dying in their sleep nowadays

these sub-elites can drop 3 minutes on epo

compared to the elites who are dropping only 30 seconds

Many of these races give out prize money. For example the Eagle Run gives $300 to the winner which was Carnes in 2013.

You would think though that unless you are winning EVERY race it would not be worth it.

The way stuff like this happens is they are going after a BIG fish, they find a dealer, leverage him with federal drug trafficking charges, and he turns over his client list.

There was a major mail order dealer in cycling a few years ago. I think he got uncovered as they were investigating Lance, a few pros got busted and lots of masters guys, but no connection to LA. A non analytical finding suggests they have transactional evidence.

If you had the ability to look at USADA's records you could probably play six degrees of separation between all of these low level dbags and someone we would all love to see get busted.

Wasn't surprised because of the jumps he made in his level of running. It's an extremely selfish thing to do. Especially to be able to show up where groups of current and past Kent State runners are gathered, past teammates, and act like you are just a hard working guy like everyone else. Pretty disgusting.

EPO is not going to give you THAT much of an advantage. I'm guessing the 2010 performance jump was due to more intense or smarter training. Dude wanted to make a go at running in the trials, getting sponsorship, etc. He improved a bit, but peaked at times that still wouldn't get him all that far. That's probably the point were he started taking EPO. He was desperate for improvement after peaking out his performance potential and watching is prime running years go by.

I ran in many races with Carnes. Even congratulated him on his performances more than once. He is (now was) one of the top NE Ohio runners and usually won or finished in the top 3 in low money races ($200-$500 in prize money) in the Ohio Challenge Series. I remember him accepting a large check (I believe over $1000) at the annual banquet honoring the overall winners and age-group winners of the series. He is well-known in the running community and I really don't understand why he would do this. This is a really sad day for the running community of NE Ohio. I think he owes a public apology to all the people he misled and took prize money from.
