So, you probably have a normal steeple/2 mile differential (meaning you're not that good at steeple) but a slower 5k relative to your 2 mile than elites.
No, my 5000 pace barely drops off from my 3-mile. I am not great at 800/1500 but have really good endurance for a high school runner. I actually thought my obvious specialty would be the marathon until I realized how naturally I do the steeplechase.
If you aren't fast you can't be good in the steeple. It's still a short quick race. Maybe you can be relatively better in the steeple than the 1500/5000/10000...but not top class unless you have the wheels.
As far as running your steeple at 5000 pace...your 5000 PR is weak. Or you are the only runner in history to have a steeple PR pace faster than 5000 PR pace. One of these is much more likely than the other.
Though the idea that steeple ability = 10k ability from a pace standpoint seems questionable. 8:00 steeple is 4:17 pace, or 26:40 10k pace. I don't think Jager is quite that good.
