I hope she gets a "shoe only" deal, and helps to transform the market.

The first shoe company to allow for a "shoe only" deal is going to seem like a hero to a lot of athletes.

This sport needs a lot of shaking up.

Pretty sure Seb Coe had a deal similar to this. Of course it was back in the early 80s/late 70s but he had an apparel company and Nike as a shoe sponsor. I imagine it could and should work well.

Does that mean that she got very little money but a portion of the company, thinking that this will become very valuable if it is bought out? (I have no idea even what this company does).

Her "Why Oiselle" blog is wonderful marketing. Perhaps she has a combination contract from Oiselle and Saucony.

I am a huge fan of Molly Huddle. She is a badass and one of our true elites from 5000m-marathon (when the time comes).

But Kara will sell more products. Her blog is a perfect example of her marketability. How many times did she say that she cried?

Right now, Molly and Shalane are elite, which means a small market.

Kara relates to the masses.

There's more to this deal than meets the eye. The Gouchers aren't rich enough to not care about money, especially when it's a big difference in money.

No way she turned down a million-dollar deal to take say '200k'. Doesn't make sense, she has a husband and son to feed. She's not dumb.

I'm sure Oiselle is giving her less, but there's definitely some kind of incentive in her contract - i.e. "if our sales go up x%, you get a bonus of x". She's banking on Oiselle being a hit and getting a bigger payday down the road than that 7-figures she was offered.

She mentions crying three times in this article.

I don't know why that strikes me as a red flag but it does. It makes me feel like she going to come to regret the big pay cut when the feelings of "love" wear off- I could see this going south fast.

Then again, if she now has the security to really dish on nike, especially if she has any damaging inside information --i.e. the real story behind why Mark Block was in the VIP tent or, you know, something actually important -- that could be a book deal/$$.

When she says "7 figures", I'm sure she's talking about the total value of the contract, i.e., say, 4 years at $250k/yr = $1mil = "7 figures".

I agree with you. Good for her, but her budget comments were a little hoity-toity. Maybe I misunderstood.

Lilot is still her agent, Kara just personalizes it and talks about her and her family. Talking about an agent's involvement isn't fan-friendly. Realize that Kara has other sponsorship deals and still has a shoe deal to be had. Lilot will certainly play into those.

As for Kara, you can bet Oiselle made her a similar arrangement as Fleshman. Yes, there are some dollars on the table, but don't be surprised if there is ownership %, too.
