But Forbidden Planet is an all-time classic. There's even a 50s-style TG in the Beaver-Cleaver alient world (Morbius' daughter).
Gattaca was excellent, as was Contact.
Jodie Foster did a great job of playing every scientist that I have ever known.
Blade Runner is my favorite Sci-fi movie.
I think the subtle special effects are better than today's movies.
It also poses some interesting questions.
It's not an action movie with a lot of unnecessary special effects.

But the fact that we've loved it since we were 8 actually makes the movies seem less good than it is. Personally, I cannot remember a time in my life where I didn't know that Darth Vader was Luke's father. Imagine being able to watch that masterpiece with fresh eyes at an older age? Damn.
Matrix also a great choice.

No one can debate what your "favorite" movie is, so don't feel bad if people don't regard Star Wars as the best sci-fi movie. It's a great movie (can be applied to all three), but the sci-fi genre is at its best when the particular technology of a world plays a major role in the development of some aspect of human culture and reflects something about our existing world. Like, surveillance in 1984 leads to totalitarianism - Spice and time travel in Dune create the conditions for a Messiah - Cyborgs in Blade Runner cause you to question what it means to be human - and the artifact in 2001 creates new levels of consciousness in evolution. The role of technology in Star Wars is not significant enough to really illuminate anything.
In terms of entertainment value, I would rank Blade Runner and Alien (sci-fi/horror) way above 2001, but in terms of importance 2001 is the clear winner. When you consider how early it was, and how many people saw it, it's pretty amazing.
Some other underrated sci-fi movies: Stargate, 12 Monkeys and Brazil, Dune ... and probably a bunch more I'm forgetting.
My only problem with Blade Runner is the bad stunt double used for Joanna Cassidy's running scene

In the "Final Cut" version they've fixed this. I'm not sure how, but it looks like Joanna running through the glass. If you haven't seen the "Final Cut" version rent it or buy it immediately. It's that good. Looks and sounds phenomenal. The scene when they enter the Bradbury to go up to Sebastian's apartment and Daryl Hannah's looks up and sees that advertising blimp through the ceiling - that's got to be one of the most amazing effects/scenes ever in a sci-fi movie.
Star Wars, Terminator, Matrix, 5th Element, FP, etc. are all amazingly great movies.
