Same here. I've grown a disdain for the sport and its fans after years of being a casual fan; the marketing is slick and many people don't even realize why they are watching anymore. It's become more of a cultural expectation that one watches than an actual sporting event - a cult that allows lifetime-failures to look down on others that abstain from the event.

On top of the fact that you're supporting overpaid* athletes (one-percent'ers for you OWS folks) while your own sport's athletes would be scuffed at by nearly any NFL fan, it really becomes an untenable confluence of society's worst aspects.

does the fact that this sporting event far overshadows your sport cause you to feel butt sore or for lack of a better word.. jealous?

wake up man track will never be the sport football is, its not a fan favorite sport its a cult sport for entusist. i actually prefer the sport to be this way, i know its not good for those trying to make money from it but from a fan standpoint i dont want it to be mainstream.

When i was competing i didn't make a lot of money but that wasn't what i competed for, it was for the glory of running fast and qualifying for USA championships and trials. forget about track being a popualar and luctriative sport like football. But don't take it out on football and make a big deal about how you're not gonna watch the superbowl, makes u sound like a sore loser!

who cares if Nick Symmonds is watching the super bowl? And last I heard, he was an 800 guy, so running would replace maybe an hour, tops, of the broadcast.

Looks to me like he's just trying to get attention, building that "brand" of his.

Imagine if football players broadcast in the media that "I will not be watching this year's USA Track and Field Championships, just I have not watched it in recent years past."

It's makes professional athletes look petty and jealous when they feel the need to tear down other professional sports.

I wish he would stick to his constructive criticism of professional track and field (which I have always found compelling), and avoid sensational opportunities to get his name out there. If you want to be the face of track and field athletes, stop criticizing the NFL and stop (unsuccessfully) courting heiresses, it's an embarrassing image for your personal brand and message.
