Fastest non runner mile pr you've heard of

One of my best friends in high school ran 5:09 in PE off zero training. We persuaded him to join the track team and he set the school record at 4:16 senior year. He went on to run 4:02 and 7:57 by sophomore year in college but he dropped out after becoming a dad.

Interesting example of the genetic component of talent for running. A guy with no training runs a 5:09. I find that amazing. I would guess that that average mile time of an average high schooler who is reasonably fit would but did zero training would be a little under 7:00 minutes or so.

My boss was a Marine pilot, and ran 15:00 for three miles in a fitness test. He also weight 175

I believe Jack Foster had a cycling background. (Not sure if he was pro or what level... maybe you do?). Combine that with Lydiard-inspired marathon training and he ran 2:11:19 at age 41.

A fair number of good XC skiers can run really fast without much training. Some World Cup level skiers who have never competed in running could ski all winter and probably go 4:10, +/-. But at the same time many are not runners at all, and even at a US champion level might have a hard time breaking 5:20.

Oh not military people... they say the most ridiculous things. I've had ex-military guys say they've run 10 miles in 60 minutes in full combat gear and 50 lb packs! I always tell them that they're confusing miles with kilometers, but they are very adamant. Then the honest ones try to get me to train them to hit their 2 mile PT in 13:00.

5:20 range is about the fastest I've seen, and that's from like soccer players and sprinters in track (not sure if that would even count.)

No, they really couldn't. OP asked what a non-runner has run. Not someone who trained prior to the race. XC skiers make great runners and have huge engines, but I doubt even Ben True could run 4:10 after not running a step during XC skiing season. You think someone who hasn't run could step on a track and click off 62's?

My cousin ran 5:15 in PE in 8th grade, no running and never ran after that. Nothing compared to what you guys are claiming, but still sort of impressive.

A compulsively lying pothead of a coworker once told me he ran a marathon in 40 minutes.

There was a time where any reasonably fit man could run sub 2:40....

I think Abdi Abdirahman--when he wasn't a runner--wins this one. Apparently, with no intentional training for any sport whatsoever, he ran 15:05 in his first 5k (alternating hard and easy 200s).

exactly i think do not really think military understand how fast the times they say are. anything under a 4:20 and Referring to what i mentiong in the original post I just dont see someone doing especially someone with a basketball background.

One thing I've found from bios of top runners is this: If a boy can run 5:00 or better his soph year (usually P.E. mile) on no training in running, he usually can run sub-4:00 by the end of college. Haven't ever heard a serious, credible account of anyone running sub-4:50 without some previous aerobic backround.

I think they left out Kim Jong Il. Credible sources say he ran a 2:01 marathon

You want to portray intelligence and stability if you're to have any credibility. Credit for trying to incite an argument - but it's a weak argument. See the problem with cycling's ridiculous classifications (aside from the hilarity that cyclists are so determined to establish a hierarchy via some arbitrary caste system)is that a very talented, inexperienced Cat2 cyclist can most definitely run, jump, skip, and throw faster than a current or ex pro cyclist right now. And with some background, said Cat2 can ultimately run marathons and pedal faster too. You're better than that. Rally. Build a better argument. Give some real evidence about how pro cyclists are superior endurance athletes and play on runners' insecurities. That's the path to a good troll. But I just can't improve your score yet. 2/10.

Fastest non-runner mile I've heard of: a 12 year old Louie Quintana ran sub 5:00 as a non-running 12-year-old. He ran much faster once he took up running.
