The point of going to different places is to eat the food that area is known for. When I was in Maine, I stopped at a restaurant and ordered two lobsters and a coke. When I was in New Orleans, I had po'boys and Jambalaya. When I was in Chicago I certainly didn't go to Gene & Georgetti. I went for Chicago style deep dish pizza!!! When I was in Buffalo, I had wings. When I was in Syracuse I had white hots. If I want a steak, I'll get one when I travel through Omaha.

If you're going to eat meat you should stick to organic grass fed beef. Stay away from the commerical beef. It's completely contaminated with hormones, steroids, antibiotics, feces, etc.

Any NYer can pick a local subway stop and come up with three or four restaurants within a 200m radius worthy of having a meal.

I'm in a foodie paradise here in Queens.

Along with a McDonalds and three or four Chinese take-aways that I'm indifferent to we can find a great Spanish restaurant, great Cuban-Chinese, a couple of pub food local bars, a New American Dinner Sanfords(tradition NYDiner a tad further out also run by the same family) a Cypriot, a Greek seafood centric and two Greek generalists, a Ramen House, a great pizza joint with restaurant run by the Sacramone family called Sac's.

We also have a Halal Chinese, a Mexican diner, a couple of hole in the wall Brazilian joints that are good, a beergarden style BBQ sandwich joint. You can toss in an Italian bakery, a bagel shop, branch of a local chain grilled chicken place, Baskin Robbins/Dunkin' twin store and a Starbunkies Six Buck Coffee WiFiOasis and not to be missed Vendy Award winning falafel & shawarma cart. All price points represented with all places good enough to satisfy an eater and most good enough to bring a smile to those who dine or even get a nod from a prissy foodie. Oh a new Egyptian that I have not gotten around to yet.

Get out of midtown and rub shoulders with locals. For NYE The N train stops at 57th and 6th Ave. If you stand on that corner you can look south and see the ball drop without the locked in a crowd feeling and then walk north for 200m and watch the RRC fireworks over Central Park as the midnight runners parade by.

For people who actually have taste (so, like, not any of the people who are getting their steaks in Applebees or ordering pizza for every meal, though I do love pizza) I'd recommend Apiary in the East Village. It's a really classy place, great food, well-respected chef, but not exorbitant prices. If you're a cheapskate from the middle of nowhere, but for truly good food in NYC it's very very reasonable. Entrees in the 20-30 dollar range mostly, if I recall. Delicious, and a nice wine list too. And it's not in Midtown (i.e. "Tourist Hell.")

For an even classier/longer dining experience, they also have nice chef's tastings (5 or 7 courses).

(Source: I work two blocks over from the restaurant and will go there from time to time when I want to take someone out for something nicer than I usually make at home or get on the run.)

His two restaurants in Santa Rosa are complete crap. They're dirty, poorly managed, filled only with unhealthy obeasties (Johny Garlic's) and douchey wannabe hipsters (Tex Wasabi's). If you're in TS, look up Dallas BBQ. It's almost insulting that some of the best BBQ can be found beneath the skyscrapers of Manhattan. Surely a sign that something is not right with the world.

I've been to Times Square once and it was so crowded that I go out as soon as I could and went to restaurant in Little Italy and had the best pizza I ever had in my life. Like Yogi Berra said "no one goes there anymore....too crowded"

If I'm picking restaurants just by seeing these two guys on TV, Mario would be the obvious choice!!

What are you into?

Japanese - lots of good, not too spendy places in Little Tokyo (9th St, and St. Marks just east of Astor Place). Also, really nice desert bar, Spot, right there.

Italian, I really enjoy Il Corallo on Spring St.

If you want to stick to midtown, there is lots of good South Indian food, and near Penn Station is K-Town, with some really good Korean. I personally like BCD Tofu House (it isn't all Tofu though).

If you are looking for something a bit more tourist-y but reasonably priced, Cafe Habana is nice. The corn is amazing.

Also, Hell's Kitchen has a lot of reasonably priced food, but I don't really remember anything by name. All of these places have food that is much better, and much cheaper, than anything you can get near Times Square or the Theater District in general.

A bit further out, really good hot pot and other authentic chinese can be found in Flushing, but it is a long trip to Queens on the 7. And some pretty good places for Moussaka in Astoria. Don't do Greek in Manhattan. As far as I can tell, all the Greek there sucks.
