I'm glad to see Herb Elliot get some mentions. He was bad ass, and never lost a mile/1500 unless I'm mistaken (I could be?)
He destroyed the mile record in 1958, smoking the reigning Olympic champ.
He broke his own world 1500 record in the Olympic final, nice work Herb.
El G, he was so exciting and beautiful to watch. When he ran 53 for the 3rd lap of the 2005 1500 final, it was soooo smooth. He's the man, but let's admit we will always wonder -- uh -- how he did it.
Kiprop, OK so a bit inconsistent, but unbeatable when he's on. Literally. His 2013 season had two amazing races. WC with a smashing last 100, and of course his breakthrough race in Monaco. I give him top 5.
Correction, El G ran 53 in the 3rd lap of the OLY final in 2004. I have fat fingers.

Top 5?! Kiprop has no competition like his predecessors. Being sometimes unbeatable is irrelevant when you're racing guys 3+ seconds slower. That combined with his MASSIVE inconsistency should keep him out of everyone's top 5.
I don't understand why people say Kiprop is inconsistent.
2007 World Championships (WC) - 4th (beat by a convicted drug cheat)
2008 Olympics - 1st
2009 WC - 4th
2011 WC - 1st
2012 Olympics - 12th (injured)
2013 WC - 1st
Besides being injured in '12 he hasn't finished worse than 4th in 5 major championships. That's very consistent.

Kiprop is not inconsistent.
He has been a factor since 2007 when he was in the world finals.
His only bomb was 2009 worlds in berlin. In London last year he was injured.
I don't get why people say Kiprop is A) inconsistent and B) isn't racing good competition.
He may lose a meaningless race mid season but he always performs when it counts (spare '12 Oly when he was injured).
He's also racing Kiplagat and Chepseba, two 3:29 guys, almost every single time he races, along with a handful of other ~3:30 guys. Who did Coe race that was that good aside from the VERY few times he raced Ovett?

Ngeny was great for a very short time and so can't rank that high. Lagat was the best in the world not only in 2007, when he won double gold, but also in 2005, when he was ineligible to compete because he'd switched allegiances. Lagat ran 3:26.34, or over 3 seconds faster than Coe and Aouita. He also ran 3:27 in 2004. He pushed El G to the limit in the Olympics in 2004. And he has a long list of medals from world and Olympic races. He's kept up a high standard for longer than possibly anyone.
Kiprop doesn't have a 3:26 guy to follow like Lagat and Ngeny did. Doesn't mean he couldn't have run that fast if he'd been around with El G. I think he's a solid #3 all time.

I don't think Kiprop is clean beyond a doubt, I just think it's far more likely that he is clean compared to El G or Lagat. He's less consistent than El G and Lagat was busted once already.
