What the **** do you care what Rupp makes? He, along side Symmonds have been our most consistent runners in a long time. Rupp is partially responseable for USA's comeback in distance running. He's also one of the fastest non africans ever, and has run extremely well in international races.

Rupp worked his *** off, and deserves the contract he has. Does Symmonds deserve a nice contract? Sure, but lets not diminish what Rupp has done to pump up Symmonds.

The comeback began 11 years ago with Meb and Deena.

if anything, I think the 5000, 800 and 200 need to go. way too often does the 5000 become a sit and kick, severely favouring the milers (yes, Farah is very capable of being one). you can easily spot the milers in the 10000 as they are the ones who are usually falling off the back.

Of course Rupp's contract was seven figures. You guys realize that Ryan Hall is a millionaire, right? He recently bought a $1.3 million dollar home in Redding. Kara Goucher is a millionaire as well, with another $1 mil dollar property outside Portland. Even a guy like Teg has done well. Meb. Deena. Ritz. Shalane Flanagan. Desi Davila. All living comfortably.

Farah IS a miler. It's his best event by far. And what track meets have you been watching? The 10000 has been nothing but sit and kick. The 5000 has at least produced several 12:4x times in the past year or two.

No, but he has a $500k pad near Mt. Tabor, an Alter-G, gets 5000 shares of NKE every quarter, and lives the dream.

He's a white American with a distance medal. He looks and sounds like the people who buy the products he's endorsing. Because of that, he's worth 10 times as much as an Ethiopian with the same credentials.

Whatever he makes, good for him, he deserves it, he is one of the top 10000m guys in the World. Only thing I do not like is that the interviews he gives are terrible.

I would tell him to be happy and enjoy what he is doing because it will not last that long, and don't be an idiot thinking you can win or PR every race. Be gracious and humble and people will like you alot more.

Also, give the Marathon a go in the Fall of 2014 and see if you can run in the 2:06-2:07 range with a nice buid up.

On the contrary, why would baseball/football/basketball players deserve to make 20x what you think Rupp makes when nearly every adult doesn't ever participate in those sports? Even if adults can't pick Rupp out of a lineup, do you really think his accomplishments don't trickle down into what the hundreds of thousands of running adults purchase every day? And for Nike, the running budget is a no-brainer when it costs them a fraction of what endorsements in other sports do.

Awkward, anti-social, gives interviews only at his convenience, not good looking (from a marketing pov).

Now go to someone like Symmonds, paid way less, yet is well spoken, good looking, makes a lot of effort to market himself, etc.

Sorta agree with you. Although I don't see him as awkward and anti social. Perhaps because he is not masculine or good looking you perceive that as being awkward. Symmonds comes off as "light in the loafers" if you know what I mean. Tries to over compensate with marketing dates with the likes of Paris Hilton. He is well spoken in the same insincere way of an ARod. These things all hurt his marketability.

Salazar is the paycheck for Rupp. He has the charisma and the looks. Can't really think of any distance runner with Madison Ave potential. Maybe the awe shucks persona of Wheating could have paid off, but he has perform at the olympics first.

I won't believe it unless someone has proof. When Alan Webb turned pro, his contract paid him 250k a year, and that was when he was the most recognizable American distance runner since the times of Salazar and Rodgers. Why would Nike pay 4 times as much to a guy nobody knows or cares about who specializes in an event that the general public has absolutely no interest in.

Maybe because popular NBA players make shoe companies 100x the $$$ that Rupp can. Fans will gladly pay $200 for shoes endorsed by Kobe. Nobody gives a damn about shoes endorsed by Rupp.

I wouldn't say the mile is Mo's best event, let alone convincingly

can you explain the pacing for the 5000 and 10000 at the majors over the last 5 years? The only reason the Kenyans aren't pushing it against Mo is because he has proven that he can also outrun them, so they figure its going to be easier to outkick him. Also, by several 12:4x times, don't you mean one race in the last 6 years? I can think of at least 3 races in that same time frame that put several runners in the 26:40s (hint: one of them was a world championships)

As Bekele has shown with Lagat, the day Mo will actually drop a fast time is the day a true miler steps up in distance (I am looking at the likes of Kiprop and Centrowitz)
