You just get used to it. I've lived in a lot of different places. One for about eight months was bang in the middle of the city. You find places. Another was in the heart of one of the biggest quarters of the city. I actually hated running around there, but then I did about half of my training on the track and half away from it so I used to go to parks instead. The biggest problem was constantly crossing roads as all of the streets were short so you were basically crossing the road a lot unless you ran in a square all of the time. It wasn't a good place to run but I was only there for a year. Having said that, the most frightening incident I had while running was in the middle of the countryside when I was 17 with a lorry driver stopping and shouting things.
