The runners excelling in the 10K need to be protected; therefore, I ask you:
Why are runners who are about to be lapped not pulled from the race, or asked to move to an outer lane? It looked bad out there, no doubt runners are often confused. And, maybe the 10K would get more respect, and the pretenders would stay away.
In all of the track races I've ever seen... I don't think I've ever seen a lapped runner come back & sprint by or even pass the leader at all later in the race, let alone on the final 100m.

Seeing performances of both Dibaba and Kidane last summer here in Palo Alto, CA there is no way they either or both could lose in such a way. I have no doubt that the confusion came from the lapped runners who were creating heavy traffic at the finish line and deflecting Dibaba's attention. What a disappointment would that be for Dibaba and the rest of the Ethiopian team.

That's a pretty dumb excuse. During the men's 10K, Bekele kept looking up at the scoreboard to see who was behind him. Presumably, the women could have done the same thing. If they had - and why wouldn't they? - the Chinese woman's presence wouldn't have been a surprise.
One Ethiopian who would be very pleased with the result is Adera. She was spitting blood being left out of the team so that Tulu could run. The Chinese girl would never had outkicked Adera.

I'm actually amazed that anyone's siding with Dibaba on this one. You've got to be kidding. Part of being a RACER is recognizing your competition and what they're up to.
But on another matter raised here, it used to be universal etiquette that any runner being lapped would move out to lane two. I hardly ever see that happening anymore.
heathen is right. also i think they need to go back to heats for the 10k maybe. it was pretty ridiculous they were lapping people constantly for the last 4k or more?
I like the idea of a lapped runner outsprinting the leader at the finish line. A good way to get on TV. Then they raise their arms in jubilation and keep going -- can anyone really believe the Ethiopian explanation?
As for the lapped runners moving out I think it can cause more confusion if they do. If everybody just agrees never to do it then the leading runners won't fear anyone pulling out in front of them. The leaders aren't running that much further. It looked like the Kenyan/Dutch runner ran in the second lane the whole race anyway.
Maybe the FIG will ask the Chinese girl to give up the gold to Dibaba.
The Kenyans and Ethiopians have been known to make all manner of goofy excuses when they lose. This goes back to Kip Keino's famous "... I let him win," when he ran out of gas against Liquori in a tough race. Keino also claimed he received death threats once, when he lost the CW games - but Ben Jipcho and Wilson Kiprigut said Keino was full of elephant turds. Or guys claiming they thought the race was "over" - like Yifter, when if you saw the race against Pre, it was obvious he plain ran out of gas just like Keino. Bizarre. Childlike.
Kip Keino and Miruts Yifter are multi Olympic Gold Medalists.
Marty Liquori, who never won anything of note, is an announcer on NBC.
In a championship like this it seems reasonable to me to enforce a drop out when lapped, at least until the field is down to say 10.

I am a very disappointed the Ethiopian team lost the gold but it might be a good thing and a wakeup call for Kostre & CO. to stop favoritism because Berhane is not the first athlete who accused him of that.
