Runner fined $100 for running at Valley Forge

Screw our federal government. Seriously what good have they done after the Constitution and Bill of Rights? Keep people of color enslaved for nearly 100 years and then treat them like second class citizens for another 100 years, causing almost all of the problems and attitudes of blacks today (blame the white man). They murdered, raped, and forced the native peoples off of their lands. The system was doomed to fail at some point I guess.

If he was running along the paved trail on the outside, next to route 23, it would be ridiculous, because traffic is still going through there.

However if he went deep into the park I can see why they would ticket him, not that I think they should.

Park rangers didn't decide to close the parks, they are not at fault.

If you don't like the government shutting down, talk to the Tea Party Republicans who shut it down.. they are the ones who have control of this. Park rangers are just doing their job as the Republicans have directed them to do.. they don't get to decide if the park is open or not.

100 bucks still cheaper than some crappy half marathons that people flock to. Maybe the park should provide a shiny medal with the ticket.

BS - Obama can decide what to keep open. His punitive measures resemble those of a bratty 12-year-old boy. He has tried to prevent people from viewing Mount Rushmore. Disabling water fountains in parks. Barricading an open WWII outdoor museum so 90-year-old WWII heroes can view it while simultaneously allowing Illegal citizens who should not even be here to protest for immigration rights on the National Hall which WAS closed. Also threatening with arrest military chaplains who want to volunteer for Sunday masses. Also shutting off from the military overseas fighting for our freedoms football and baseball broadcasts which make a very difficult existence a bit more bearable.

Everything Obama is doing is to inflict the most suffering on the public when only 17% of the government is actually shut down. Unbelievable the pettiness invovled.

I remember when they threaten to close the parks in California a year or so ago, and then suddenly they found 54 million in the park budget. Next thing you know the head of the California Park Service resigned. I doubt it's a safety issue. Anytime you enter a park there is danger. I think it's interesting the govt. doesn't trust people to make their own educated decisions in this regard. Sounds like power play to maximize pain and exposure, rather than being smart about what is partially shutdown and what they trust citizens to handle by themselves.

^this. Obama knows that he and the Democrats have done a great job portraying the shutdown as 100% fault of the Republicans. As such, he wants to make the shutdown as painful as possible. There are tons of instances of operations/services/locations being ceased/closed that weren't during the last shutdown.

But if the parks were truly closed, then there would be no park rangers to give out tickets. If they are getting paid, then the park should be open.

The Senate passed a budget that funds the whole government and Boehner refuses to bring it up for a vote in the House. (Even though he promised to do so over the summer.) What's your point?

The Republicans closed the government down. Starting all these threads about how terrible that is is not going to help you guys. Instead, start threads about how the government shut down and hardly anybody noticed.

Agreed that it wasn't the rangers decision to have things like this. The fine seems overly aggressive though. A first time warning would have been enough. If they caught the same guy twice, then so be it.

I have, and likely will again, run throughout park grounds during this time. I won't park anywhere near however, and I won't make a point of making a nuisance of myself to rangers ... they are just doing their job. And yes, comparing the rangers to nazis is just the tiniest bit over the top.
