my three experiences running with dogs.
Used to run with my friend who had two Huskies. He would run 5-15 miles with them 4-7 days a week. They ran a 5k in low 16 once to win the dog division of a 5k. He was the limiting factor, not them.
Another friend i run with used to have a blue healer cattle dog and he would run 10-15 miles at 6:30 pace and we would get home and the dog would not even look tired. He won a mile dog race once in 4:40 and he was holding the dog back for sure. And that was even with a lease issue at 800 meters. Also, one time he decided to run an all out 200m on the road (he has 49 second 400 speed) and the dog ran in front of him looking back at him as if to say "Let's go!" the whole time haha That dog had speed to burn for sure.
Lastly, my 9 lb miniature dachshund ran 21:20 with my wife and easily could have ran faster. My wife was not in race shape at the time and she said Lucy wanted to run faster the whole time.
Biggest thing I see where dogs struggle is heat. They are not able to run fast in heat at all from my experiences.
My 62-pound chocolate lab broke 36 with me for a 10K trail run. I had to out-sprint her FTW. A heavier lab, probably a lot slower.

Wow, that's surprising.
I didn't think they were fast. I suppose 21:20 isn't very quick but still. Can't imagine it trotting along and breaking 17:00!

If you get a breed standard that has been bred for hunting, you will not find that to be the case. They can go all day hunting birds. Labs can run 14-18 mph and sprint up to 35 mph in bursts. My lab was all muscle until she was 8.
Guys with Garmin's have clocked their bird dogs running 40-45 miles in one day of hunting.

hey guy i mentioned having the cattle dogs had a doxie that would run 10+ miles with him when he was in HS. I had no idea doxies could run that far/fast until I had mine.
