Did MONTAÑO think she was Kemboi or something ? (why did she finish in lane 5)?

weird race but she wasn't going to win by running straight in lane 3.

Did the same at the WC, drifting to lane 3.

I think the extra cost her 4 hundreths

You have to consider that if she had stayed in lane 2 she could have gauged her distance from the leader and perhaps given the effort to overtake the leader.

When you are out at lane 5 you can't tell at all how off you from the lead.

It would have made a difference.

A quick aside, just wanted to say, in general, it's been quite enjoyable, over the past couple years especially, getting these great race analyses accompanied with great embedded video.

The commentating (or whatever the word is) featured in that coverage (embedded video) was pleasantly humorous. Everything the Letsrun recap pointed out was covered by the announcer/s of that broadcast. The timing of the announcing comments--the dramatic effect, the surprise and humour--was so spot on, they could hardly have been edited to be so illustrative.

In that same vein, Tadese, at least in that front-running he did in the Berlin 2009 10k, ended up, at least, with Silver, I believe, for his efforts--and a finish line finger wag to put the asterix after Bekele's "Sign of the cross."

But the prior poster's point still stands--the excessive front-running, regardless of its "Prefontaine" like praisable virtues--that style which Montano shares with, at least, Duane Solomon--doesn't have great prospects.

Anyone know why the Russian pacemaker didn't drop out in due time? If she stayed in because she thought she could finish, then she seems to not be an experienced pacemaker. I would think the only time an experienced pacemaker would have the gall to stay in and finish a race is if they really are feeling good and think they can hold on. No way an experienced pacemaker would gauge things that badly as she did: she couldn't have been "on" as she was already starting to interfere with the race unfolding at 400m, and was real slow sometime around or after 600m. She DNF'ed according to the results.

Pardon, I meant, the interference was beginning to be clear on the penultimate straightaway, not at the bell turn.

That was a definite DQ when she ran sideways and knocked back Akkaoui.

Not only is he dumb but she's on steroids!

forward momentum people, let alone being able to drive off your feet as hard as you are angling to the right.

Do some 60 meters on the track, start in lane 1 and end up in 5. You'll be surprised how you lose almost a full second,

compared to if you would have just run straight in lane 1.

Ridiculousness aside, one thing we should consider is this:

Did the slightly more even pacing allow her to come closer to the win today than at the world champs?

She ran the race terribly. But since she ran slightly more even splits she was a lot closer to the Kenyan (Sum).

Is this because Sum ran slower? Montano's time was slower as well, but there were tactics and the trip and so on, so it's not too surprising.

Overall, I think Montano ran a better race and might have had a better chance of winning if she hadn't tripped.

Something else I wanted to mention is the possibility of sneaking up on your opponent from lane 5. Possible that the Kenyan didn't see her so far over and she was going for the element of surprise. Is this legal?

She's a talented, world-class runner, but she's also a complete moron who can't run a tactical race to save her life. If she can't figure that out, she's never going to medal at a world championship.

After watching the race a few times, I get the feeling that Montano intentionally veered to the outside lanes to avoid being seen by the Kenyan woman and therefore "steal" the race. It didn't work.

It's really not, Tadese and Geb actually had to do it, they could never have outsprinted Bekele in those races. For different reasons obviously, one just losing to the better 10k man and Geb just having his best track racing behind him. In fact, same for Pre too, he wasn't a sprinter. Whereas Montano has clearly exhibited the ability to kick for home and be in it. But hell, props to her for having bigger balls than most of the US runners combined.

It also looked like she impeded another runner coming off the last turn
