Everyone seems to be forgetting Laghat who can easily outkick

Rupp and Gebhriwet. In a slow race (12 or slower going through the bell), I have

2) Alamirew

3) Laghat

What happened with the EA''s. They used to always putting in mid race surges or go flat out from the gun. That is the way to beat Mo but nobody has shown the balls to do it

Wrong on all counts, again. What did they try in Birmingham? They went through the 4th kilometer at 14:20 pace--slow enough that a second tier guy like Chris Thompson is not only still in the race, but holding the lead with 600m to go. And it was Thompson's burst that dropped them to 64.7 to set up the final 800. You do realize the split @ 3800 clocked 70.35--uh, 14:40 pace.

Obviously, a .58 penultimate lap isn't taking the sting out if the pace has been utterly pedestrian, hitting the bell at 12:21.

Watching Lausanne, and Pre, and now Birmingham again, I think Alamirew is going to take Mo down.

Last lap for him was about 54 flat - 54.1 but it all came in the last 200. I had him unofficially in about 1242.4 with 200 to go.

And he let up at the about 7-8 meters from the line. I timed it twice. Once 24.2 once 24.0. 24.2 was more accurate but with the let up he might have gone sub 24 and he came from third to first so he ran farther than 200 meters.

If he has the lead with 200 to go, it might be hard for Farah to beat him.

So when the pace is 10 seconds faster a 61 penultimate lap neutralizes Mo's kick, otherwise a 58 leaves him feeling fresh and ready to go. Right. You're also not factoring in his recovery from illness at Pre. Overlooking that is a mistake as Birmingham showed he's virtually unbeatable from 1k out if the pace isn't hot.

He ran and closed in what it took to win. Why do you assume he couldn't have run faster? Mo hasn't ever tried a real time trial outdoors. That 12:53 obviously wasn't his limit.

A bit of back-and-forth, eh? What race did you watch? Thompson had pole till 600m left in Birmingham so how do you contend "unbeatable from 1k out" based on that race?

This is where my logic rests, so I'll keep it present tense. Mo Farah runs well in 2010, but still isn't a player. In fact, despite him being 26 and around for seven years, he's really only known as a mid-pack/10-5th place finisher. Suddenly in 2011 he is the master of the whole game, eh?

So that's the context where I draw from.

Two years ago Mo ran 12:53.1 and 26:46.5. His 2011 master-year. He kicked in Daegu to win in a slower 13:23 and just fell short with silver in quicker paced 27:14. In London he outkicked all to win in a pedestrian 13:42 and tactical 27:30.

2013. Mo ran 3:15 at Oxy, not the A and 2 seconds slower than his meet record from '12. Jump to Pre. Have you heard of any other runners/racers who raced after an illness or jetlag or pollen or a fight with a spouse or... The very fact that you bang on about Mo's virus is a testament to how manipulating Salazar is, because that is his M.O. as a media blazer. The pace had a little bit of heat and a 61 penultimate left Mo gassed and Soi with wheels 13:05.88--Mo's best time of the season, yet his first loss in a long time. And you (and those like you) want to contend that Mo was sick or recovering from illness there to create a context for the outkicking he suffered.

However, it continues to stand that while Mo has outkicked everyone else since then, he has not done so off a pace that comes close to the pace he could hold in 2011 and most recently Soi's move with 200m @ Pre. We just watched Alamirew kick to go 13:06.69, less than a second off Mo's best this year. Alamirew who was a step off Mo at Pre and then on the clock in 12:54.9 a week after Pre.

My diatribe. But at some stage you need to unhook yourself from the Mo Farah matrix that has now run its course...it's 2013. Mo wasn't sick...he's just 30 years old and whatever the juice that catapulted him midpack obscurity was, there's a 23 year old with speed who knows "by the clock" that he can run sub 12:55 "right now".

What did Mo at Oxy in 2012 and 2013 both have in common? He WON THE RACE. When are you guys going to get it? Mo doesn't run for time. You can't look at one year and say "he ran slower that year so he's obviously in worse shape." That's stupid logic. If he ran two seconds slower and lost, then you'd have a point.

Mo was sick at Pre and he still got 2nd. If you don't believe he was sick, then you're stubborn and nothing will change your mind. Why do you doubt that? It was already known pre-race that he was sick.

The biggest difference between Mo pre-2010 and now is strength. I think Salazar said something like he couldn't do 10 push ups and he was doing his easy runs too slow. Mo clearly had the talent. He just needed the right coach to get him there and Salazar was it.

Well, that could work both ways, too. Why do you NOT doubt it? The guy was sick and he smoked everyone, except Soi? That's a bit sketchy, imo. Mo's good, even great, but come on .. that was a class field, and you think an under the weather Mo Farrah could easily run away from all of them? In a slow race? Including Longosiwa, Koech, Jeilan, Lagat and Alamirew. Mo beat Alamirew by just a couple meters in B/ham last week, the same distance he beat him by in Eugene. So how sick was he in B/ham?

Except the 5000 at Birmingham was basically the same tactic except on the penultimate lap there Farah ran 57.6 and still won by a half second against the best in the world over 5000m this year. Can't you people understand that when someone is off because of being sick or not in great condition it doesn't mean that that race represents their abilities?

What I remember reading is that Mo wasn't sick at the time of the race. He has sick like a week before, which impacted his training.

IF that is correct, and not just a good media quote, then it isn't impossible imo that a little bit of missed training could have a small effect on his fitness.

If not, then he either didn't have his best that day (keep in mind unless you are significantly better than everyone else you have to be ON to win); or he just doesn't have the fitness to kick well off a quick pace...which we may well not find out until Moscow, and that's IF someone takes it out hard.
