DI finals were slower than the DIII finals in identical conditions.

It is crazy to me that so many people that either are fans or participants in track do not understand the basic tactics in a competitive race. If you are leading in a 1500m where there is no athlete dominant over the others then you are at a disadvantage. It is ridiculous that people come on Letsrun after nearly every competitive 1500m and make the same ignorant comments acting as if this is a high school race. That is unless they are high schoolers I guess!

A Duck can be one sided and annoying but he is spot here. That kid was under tremendous pressure that none of you will understand unless you were the fastest recruit in the country and went to the biggest stage (which is Oregon) and always has been since Jumbo Elliot left Villanova. Arkansas never had anything like that when they were dominating with foreigners in a weak era. They never hosted NCAA Champs and Olympic Trials.

Coming off an injury and sub-par results in front of the home crowd in the only place that really gives a dang about this sport. He will cherish that moment forever.

He will probably never have a moment quite like that in this sport.

Whatever. I understand basic tactics, I run myself. If I am a 3:40 guy and I know there's better guys in the field than me and I am not a kicker then hell I would run as close to 3:40 effort as I can. Who cares. Makes for a better race overall, and increases my own chance at doing better than if I let myself sit in a 2:12 800m split and then have to kick with guys in a race that has gone slower at the pace of some middle school boys meets.

There have some pretty stupid comments on this thread. The reality is that all of the other 1500 m racers were playing right into Fleet's hands. Fleet has the best 400 meter kick of the field and they go out in 2:12? Where is the coaching to allow this to happened? No one can blame Fleet for taking advantage of what was handed to him. I'd say the only one who ran a smart race, was Mac Fleet. Give him and his coach the credit for it. And the post that he almost hit someone when he raising his arm in victory was way out of line. His raised arm was no where near any other runner. The thread smacks more of jealously of the Oregon program than anything else. Let's face it, they (Oregon) just put on a great meet in superb weather and crowds that were double of what other hosts have been getting. Great meet and great final day performances by the Oregon men.

A weaker runner should never lead. It gives even more of an advantage to the stronger runners. If the pace is slow, a weaker runner will be able to stay in it longer and maybe get lucky and pick off someone that gets caught in a box or has to run too wide.

We saw the weaker runners try to set a good pace at the Trials last year and get smoked by the top guys in the end.

Certainly a great meet put on by Oregon. The grass pollen was hell on a lot of people but U of Oregon can't help that.

There were several strong kickers in there so I dont think you can really definitively say that everyone's tactics were flawed but Fleet. The reality of tactics and positioning were very important and several guys went down. It could just as easily have been Fleet that went down.

When Centro won at the 2011 usa's the first two laps were in 2:11.96 and then everyone kicked like mad the final 400m.

When and where will a video replay of the race be available? I really want to see it. Curious about the Mcgregor fall. Please reply

Have a slower PR isn't the only way to be weak. Being a slower 400m sprinter is also a weakness. There were runners in the race that knew they didn't have the best finishing speed but they still went out slow.

Masters threw a punch at McGregor after the race because McGregor tripped him when he fell w/ 150 to go.

Masters chose to get on the rail with 300 to go when he was in 3rd and had options. Then when guys moved up on the outside he was stuck behind a fading McGregor (who shouldn't have been in the race in the first place but for a Hatz brain fart in the semi) and Masters was in big trouble. Casey clipped legs with McGregor, stuff happened and Masters blamed McGregor in the heat of the moment after the race.

Masters needs to take a look at himself and his race tactics. And McGregor should have told Masters to go %$^& himself. I hope McGregor did.

The Oregon men can't even finish top three and the Oregon women pulled a choke-la-homa while trying to get a title. And on their home track. And given unlimited resources.

Looks like the Oregon programs as a whole need to evaluate how they do things. Very disappointing team results in perfect weather at home.
