What would you expect a 9:00 3200 runner to run Freshmen year of college?

    I think everyone is too optimistic. I'd say 14:30 is the fastest you'll go your freshman year. Not a bad time by any rate, but if you are a competitor, most 5ks turn into a blazing mile 1 and then the mileage logged by more senior runners starts to show.

    i know 4 people personally who were between 855 and 9 and they ran between 14:15-14:55 and 3:45-350 none of them ran a 10k

    9:00 for 2 mile is equivalent to 14:26,14:27, and 14:25 according to a few different calculators. Would you expect them to get slower Freshman year? I usually see a 1% improvement on average. Just saying that's what my guys average and what I expect. Baring injury no one should ever get slower Freshman year.

    I have never heard of a 9:00 guy running slower than 14:25 freshmen year

    Even if a 9:00 guy ran high mileage in HS, chances are he trained mostly by himself. Very few highschools have multiple 9:00 guys or even anywhere close to it.

    The big difference is being able to train with guys as fast or faster than you in college. And staying healthy in the process.

    OP probably started this conversation because 15 years ago, if you broke 9 minutes, you were a blue chip. I don't think this may be the case anymore as training has been refined at the high school level. As a result, while 8:59 is a tremendous mark, it's no longer indicative of a Ryan Hall-esque talent.

    Zach Wills Ok-State ran 8:17 in the 3k in high school and ran 14:29 i think.

    8:46 3200 being equivalent to 1410/2940 is way off base. Sorry Johnson brothers and JK. A kid runs 8:46 in high school is much better than 29:40! Rudy Chapa ran 28:25 for 10000 in high school.

    That is way too ambitous.

    Averaging your two 5k times and you get 14:10. A 14:10 is roughly the same as 29:40 and a ffreshman is likely to be worse at 10k than 5k so your 5k/10k equivalnets are off.

    . YOu can't expect anything close to 7 seconds per mile (14 seconds per 3200 every year) when they are already that good.

    By your logic they'd be running close to 8:00 when they graduate?? Even if they slowed down in their improvement to say 5 seconds per mile per year, you'd have them running 8:20 for 3200 when they graduate??? So you expect every 9:00 guy to run 13:26/28:05. Give me a break.

    Here's another way to think of it.

    If I've done the math right, a 9:00 3200 (not 2 mile, I added 3.2 seconds to make it a 2 mile) is equivalent to about 14:33/30:30 according to John Kellogg's chart

    So what do you think decent improvement is? It's hard to improve a lot. As explained above, 10 seconds per year in the 3200 is too much to expect.

    Well according to JK's chart, an 8:51.7 (8:54.9 2 mile) is equivalent to about 1419/30:00.

    No doubt it happens because of injury, burnout, maladjustment, anemia, other distractions, etc, but a 9:00 guy should easily be able to run 14:25 in college unless he ran like 130 mpw to get to 9:00. Lowish 8:40 guys in Derrick and Ritzenhein went sub 13:30 as freshman. Rupp was in the same range and ran 13:37 the summer after high school and then 28:15 as a true OU frosh. Like I said, I've known 9:15-20 CO preps (converted from almost 5,500') run in the 14:20s and sub-30:00 as college freshmen.
