Even better, he ran 8:20 in a race where he was in no man's land the entire time. I think he's going to be a huge factor if he can stay healthy. Also, he trains with See and Bolas, who are both 3:35 guys I believe. But See just had a solid showing in the 5k. So this group is coming along nicely.
Anything can happen in a steeple and Cory should most certainly be in contention for a spot on the team.

He is spotting Jager and Huling almost 30 seconds with 5000 PR. That is much more telling than mile speed and by the way, Jager and Huling have him beat by a ton there too.

I'd hold that last sentence back. Leslie has some wheels. Let's see if he runs a 1500 in the next month or so before agreeing that Cabral is "just as fast" as him.

Jager did run a 3:54 mile 4 years ago.
Anyone thinking that any other steepler's gonna beat out Jager is an idiot.
That being said i believe Leslie can be 2nd or 3rd to make the team.
Cory is on a roll and just getting started for the year. After his last two mile races wins early on outdoors I could see he was ready to break out this year. I thought he would run 8:20 this year but not in his first race!
I would bet by the end of summer he will have much faster prs in the 1500-Steeple-3000. I don't know if he can get in a top notch 5000 (doubt it yet) but if he does he will be close to 13:30 at least.
Faster than Marc Croghan and Henry Marsh ran for 5000. Two 8:09 steeplers.
I bet even Cory's coach would say Huling (who he used to coach) can beat Jäger.
And now a 3:34.
This is an honest question and not meant to put down Leslie in any way. Did he get hurt in the last lap of the steeple at U.S. nationals? He must've lost nearly 100 meters over the final 300.
I wish the guy continued success and improvement.
After that 3:34, you have to wonder whether he either is in the wrong event or has a lot of potential to drop his time in the steeple. Maybe he's a miler and he may decide that. Or maybe he's going to run sub 8:10 this year. Incredible race.
I think that Jager is now the 2nd best american Steepler.
