Alistair Brownlee running Stanford 10K

he will run 28:50-29:10 off of ~6 weeks of hard training and all the lets run chavs will proclaim that the olympic triathlon was short bla bla bla.

if he showed up to the track in full 100% shape he would prolly run 28:20-28:30 but he won't do that at stanford because he isn't in that great of shape yet.

29.15, 29.35 and 29.48 are his legit road 10km times from the last few years on measured running courses against good standard opposition

He was 2nd when he ran 29.15, the guy who beat him, running 29.10, is Jonny Mellor, who was recently 10th at Carlsbad in 14.04 and has impressive pr's of 13.36, 28.51 (track) 28.50 (road) and 62.59 half.

Brownlee does his track training in Leeds with a guy called James Walsh, who has ran 13.39 and 28.37

Brownlee is in the same running bracket as Walsh and Mellor, very good GB national level. Therefore, he is capable of 28.30-29.00 for 10,000m. Whether he can run close to this after swimming and biking, or if tri courses are short, I do not know and I do not care.

i never said he wasn't capable of 28:30 but i'm saying right now that he isn't in that shape and won't run 2830 at payton jordan. that is all.

28 low would be impressive, but suspect 28mid to high. He is way too good for the hackers he competes against, good on him for testing himself against proper athletes.

You do realize that his swimming is just about as good as his running. He is incredible in the open water just like all elite level ITU triathletes. The guys he is going to race at Stanford are incredible athletes too but remember, all they do is run. I'm sure that most of those ITU guys have the ability to be sub 29 min (low 28) guys if all they did is ran.

I'll say he runs 28:40 tomorrow for being not in top shape.

When I see stuff like this I always think: tomorrow it will go one way or the other. In other words, he will run a very good time (like 28:30) or he won't (like 29:30 or slower).

What will you come on here and say if he doesn't do so well? Nothing, because you hide behind a made-up name.

If he runs a rather ordinary time, it could mean that he is not that great a runner (compared to distance runners) or it could mean that he had a bad race, or that he is not in great shape for just running right now. Considering that he is the best Oly-dist triathlete ever.

If he runs a great time it proves he is a great runner as well as triathlete. I think everybody recognizes this.

It won't change the fact that many triathlons don't measure their run courses rigorously 100% of the time.

on the other thread about this IAAF Tech Committee member David Katz who measured the 2012 London OG course said another IAAF measurer Hugh Jones- who measured the Marathon course with him- did the work on the run part of the tri to IAAF road standards.

Until you verify the self announced {{9.71km fact.}} I'm going with the word of one of the very senior Olympic level officials.

He may say he is "not in shape", but he is a tough runner. He grew up as a fell runner (ie "race ya to the top of that hill and back"). In fact he is listed as running for Bingley Harriers. He LIKES being challenged, and I think he is doing this race to get pushed because there isn't anyone currently on the tri scene that can outrun him right now.

Some say the San Diego course was short (there is no reason it should have been...) but he was also basically kissing babies the last 100 m of the race. Plus he was the biggest animator on the bike, attacking numerous times, including near the end of the bike leg. He wasn't just "sitting in".

I'm predicting 29:20 -- 28:30 for the first 9900 meters, then 0:50 for the last hundred meters of high-fiving the spectators, doing the airplane, and slow-walking the last three meters to the finish line. Bad triathlon etiquette is hard to break.

They always do that at the end of triathlons though. If it's accepted behaviour as it seems to be, how could it be 'bad etiquette'?

Yeah, I know. I was still disappointed when I saw Brownlee do it. (Not the airplane, as far as I recall.)

In all seriousness, he does look like a decent runner. Some very good triathletes look painfully awkward on the run.

I don't think that anyone on here is not aware that he is a tough runner. They know, or should know, that he is a 2-time World Champion and current Olympic Champion in triathlon, which we all know involves running.

Just want to say that Brownlee's result tonight was outstanding, and in light of what I wrote yesterday want to make this an example of how people should stop anonymously speculating about things like this.

Just wait until it happens. Most of the people who were pro-triathlete were wrong, and they just offered up a bunch of pre-race excuses anyway.

Congratulations to Brownlee, he showed what the best triathletes can do and ACTUALLY DO in a running event. I am convinced that if he knew his condition accurately and was in the faster section and trained just for running for 6 months he would easily be at 28:10-15 and if he really targeted the track 10k he might run 27:50s.

That placed him 2nd in that heat and what would have been 17th in the faster paced Section 1 heat. (http://www.rtspt.com/events/stanford/pjc13/130428F021.htm)

Pretty great time I'd say and will lead to some great speculation as to how fast he could be with some specific and more quality 10K track training!

It's a message board. The primary purpose of it is to talk smack and moan about how little your wife is having sex with you. Anonymity is a benefit. It fuels interesting and frank discussions.

The track MUST have been 10% short, because everyone knows triathletes can't really run.
