As one of the other posts said, it's amazing that the soon-to-be-famous Frank Shorter was dead last in the 2M and didn't break 9!
The race I'd really love to see was Lindgren versus Pre in the Pac-8 CC championships later that same year. By all accounts, a knock-down, drag-out prize fight, with Lindgren staggering to a slight win over the )then) frosh.

Both were extremely competitive. Lindgren wasn't going to cow tow to a HS kid at this point and Pre was.....well, Pre.
Agreed. One thing for Lindgren just to run Pre off his feet and leave him for dead, but he seemed to want to rub his face in it a bit. Surging repeatedly, then kicking hard in the end. Maybe he wanted to teach him a lesson. Mean little b@stard.
If I were Pre, I'd want to kill this guy in XC as soon as I got to Oregon...
In a reply on Youtube, Leif Bugge mentioned that he obtained the 2-mile footage from this site:
Performing a search of "Prefontaine" reveals that there also exists footage of the August 2-3, 1972 Oslo meet where Pre finished 2nd to Pekke Vasala in the 1500m on Day 1 of the meet and then won the 3000m on Day 2, setting an AR.
This footage is indicated as "currently unavailable for online viewing." If any of you geniuses can figure out how to get it posted online (legally, of course), humanity will owe you a great debt.

Lets also remember inferior equipment and only 4 in field-i wonder what today's wonder kids could do in that equipment and on a dirt track with all that surging going on. Pre was a beast-
