Atleast they got Haile Gebrselassie and Kenenisa Bekele correct. I would throw out Prefontaine and put El Guerrouj.

No mention of Waldemar Cierpinski, one of only two double OG Marathon runners? Pre shouldn't be in any Top 10 list, never won an international title.

I'd put all of the other finalist's from Pre's bracket (Waitz, Shorter and Coe) ahead of Pre. Easily.
You'd put other finalist's what ahead of Pre?

http://rw.runnersworld.com/pdf/groat.pdfNo way Pre should be in the final four. Scott Jurek in elite 8 is also, highly debatable.
In today's issue of Joggers World, we'll be analyzing various methods in how to decrease your walking rest time from 5 minutes to 4 minutes during your 20 minute long run.

Did you look at the honorable mention? Wanjiru, Ryun, and Dibaba are grouped with Dean Karnazes and Phillipedines.... But specifically Dean f***** Karnazes....wow.
Hey, where's the Penguin?????

So apparently if you drive drunk and kill yourself, a 4th in the Olympics is better than 2 golds, 2 silvers, and a handful of ground-breaking world records
What the hell does that have to do with Fam?
WTF did I just read?
These are the people that represent the sport in mass media. Pathetic.
Dean Karnazes- "undeniably great".
Neither Bannister nor butt-naked, buggerous Leonidas nor even Nurmi was anywhere near as great as Walter George.
Bannister in particular was just at the right place at the right time. He wasn't any better than his contemporaries and his achievements were eclipsed very quickly.
Kick all the marathoners and ultras off the list. Seven out of the 16 greatest are marathoners or above, ludicrous. But replace Benoit with Kristiansen, who not only dominated for a long time, but did so in the dope-starved late 80's. Kristiansen can represent the marathoners.
Replace Slaney with Kazankina. Who are they kidding calling Slaney the best in the world any year, let alone all-time?
Replace the rest of that marathon-biased crap with Kratochvilova, Koch, Juantorena, Rudisha, Kipketer and Ngugi.
Then throw out Powell and replace him with Michael Johnson.
Boot Ryan Hall and Salazar off that honorable mention list, and replace Pre with Viren. More stupid "best American" entries.
Finally boot Pheidippides. The guy was so stupid he ran 40 miles instead of just using a horse. Replace him with the very worthy Vladimir Kuts.
No American should be in there ahead of Craig Virgin. Also, where's Henry Rono?

Damn brah, your list includes many obvious cheats. Your list would be valid on a thread titled "Greatest Doped Runner of All-Time"

your constant bannister bashing is getting a bit old
can you just go away already
They only included one of the great east African women? Really? Catherine the great was, well, great. So at least that's right.
But as much as I can't stand for dibaba only getting an honorable mention/ no defar, did they really forget Tulu?!?!?
Wow, Runner's World shows just how little they actually care about the sport. NO WAY does Pre rank in the top four. Scott Jurek getting in the elite 8 is awful, he shouldn't even be listed. He is a star in one of the most fringe sports in the world. While they are at it, why don't they just add in the top stair climber in the world and best race walker.

Oh, wait a minute. I cancelled it over thirty years ago.
Anyone stop and think maybe the list is supposed to be a bit of a joke? I think the author has published a couple of humor books. Plus, I don't think even RW thinks Karnazes is all that great.
Pre in 1976 would have crushed Viren.
You guys forget how young Prefontaine was when he died. Shame on you.

One more thing ... the hipster runner claim about Prefontaine as an alcoholic. Give it a rest already. Prefontaine perhaps drank too much at a party after a specific track meet and died in a car accident (others at the party said he did not drink too much). Give the narrative that Prefontaine was an alcoholic a rest.

Viren was only a year and a half older than Pre. They wouldve both still been in their primes, and we wouldve almost definitely seen the same result

You should give the narrative that Prefontaine was special a rest.
