Not true. I spent two years of undergrad at Oregon and two at Washington. Very different academic experiences. Oregon curriculum wasn't much more challenging than the curriculum at my high school. And like someone posted above, when you're in classes with brighter peers, the expectations are higher, the curve is set higher, and the faculty have to be on their toes. UW had higher quality faculty even at the undergrad level.

Of course if you're a competitive runner there are other issues to consider...

So you're comparing your first two years of college to your second two years? Everyone's first 2 years are easy. You likely have not even started taking many of your major requirements within the first 2 years. If this is what you're basing your opinion on, then your opinion is very false and inaccurate.

This bright peer thing is very overrated. You cannot make calculus 1 any harder than calculus 1. Really, you should just look at the other thread titled "are ivy league schools really better than other universities".

Dear God, you are hopeless...Oregon grad by chance?

I have no hope of convincing you of something you so desperately need or want to believe, but I'll say this; if your Calculus 1 instructor is a crappy instructor, you will have a harder time in Calculus 1.

The charter for normal schools are to teach Liberal Arts and skills for Secondary Education professions.

UW is one of the top research universities in the world and is an R&D university.

It's a free country and you cam choose either type of school.

No, I totally agree with you that UO has some of the lowest expectations in regards to admission standards. Totally don't think UW and UO are in the same ballpark academically... UW is great, I am just saying that Stanford is in another league and to deny that would be wrong.

I'm from the east, so I can't speak to the quality of western schools outside of what I know from various rankings lists. But it wasn't me who lumped UW with UO. I think UW is likely better.

What I can say for sure is that the kids from our high school who get into top schools like Princeton work their butts off there and barely sleep--and these were kids with perfect or near perfect SAT's. Meanwhile, 100+ mediocre students from the same high school traipse off to State U every year where they party constantly, barely study, and often get better grades than they ever did in high school. Public universities are designed to be accessible to the general public. If the academics were hard, there wouldn't be so many morons teaching in our public elementary and secondary schools, since that's where they attended. Besides, our high school guidance counselor tells parents that he can get practically ANY student from our high school into certain state schools in the region. Therefore, they can't possibly be very hard.

Love it Stanford and Washington didn't even get a single point in the NCAA while Oregon won it's 4th straight NCAA indoor National Championship. Watch the Oregon Women will get the triple crown this year Cross,Indoor and Outdoor. Can't wait to watch the NCAA again this year in Eugene.

Can we get back to Coach Milty and the staff at Stanfraud being a complete disaster?

ComeONN- you are shameless troll and probably a Cal fan. Miltenberg is a phenomenal coach IN HIS FIRST YEAR. After just 4 months of coaching at Stanford he led the XC women to a 3rd place finish!! Higher than ALL the years Dunn was in charge!!! I know for a fact Cuffe and Hatton are redshirting getting ready for outdoors. Just wait.

As for UW, I always thought people were too hard Metcalf but now i'm starting to believe the rumors to. Katie Flood had a very sub par season.

How do you know this "for a fact"? How do you know the reasons why Cuffe and Hatton didn't run winter? Why would Milt redshirt Cuffe for development reasons ("to get ready" for spring as you say) when she ran all of her freshman year and they could have used the points in indoor? I think you're wrong.

Word has it that Hatton left the program earlier this calendar year. Apparently she didn't like that Miltenberg had so much control over her training. Milt is a great coach but i don't know if it's wise to attempt to handle both the men's and women's distance teams. Dunn ran into that problem and brought in PattiSue Plumer.

She's still listed on the roster, but sometimes schools don't update them quickly. Why would a runner not expect that her college coach would have a lot of say over her training? Was she planning to keep working with a private coach or something? Not for nothing, but given Milt's success at Georgetown and general reputation, I'd trust him as much or more than I would have Plumer, who'd have been the one to recruit Hatton.

With all that talent Stanford got/has you'd have to be a REALLY bad coach to have them not place top 5 in XC. They definitely had one of the best recruiting classes. I'm really not impressed with Miltenberg so far either. But what the distance runners do in spring will be the deciding factor.

And those Hatton rumors sound like BS to me. Having control is what coaching is all about. To commit to a college thinking that a coach would let you do your own thing seems really dumb.

Seems really dumb, but there are those prima donna high school stars who want it to still be all about them. Chetelat, Sveinsson, and Ferrante didn't stick with the program either.
