So, you don't buy the following story?

The term Rip City was coined by play-by-play announcer Bill Schonely during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers during 1971. The three-point field goal did not exist. Blazers' guard Jim Barnett took an ill-advised long distance shot that magically found the basket. Schonely screamed "Rip City! All right!" Schonely admits that he has no idea how he came up with the expression, but it became synonymous with the team and the city of Portland.

RCT Club has unfortunate pharmaceutical overtones.

Where was he incorrect? The Rip City expression is only relevant to 1971-era fans.

People still use the term in Portland, heck the Blazers even had an alternate uniform that said "rip city" last year. When the team is doing well, people will exclaim "rip city". Its fun.

Are you over the age of 30? If so you may enjoy the name out of nostalgia for your childhood. I'm a long time transplant but have never, in the time I've been here, heard anyone exclaim Rip City. Worse yet, I don't know of anyone with season tickets. The Blazers' brand is dead for now. In the last 10 years, we've had the Jail Blazer era followed by the Greg Oden era.

Maybe they keep Ripcity alive since it was their only championship. The term means nothing to the current generation of Portlanders.

1 City of Roses - are there a lot of roses there? I guess it rains a lot, but I have never been there.

2 Bridgetown - I get this.

3 Beervana - that can't be the name for a track team.

4 Little Beirut - why is it called this?

5 P-Town - never understand why people call something a nickname that does not shorten the real name. Like calling someone named "John" the "J-man".

6 Rip City - why is it called this?

7 Stumptown - is this because of logging? you have to forgive me, I have never been there.

8 PDX - never understood referring to your city by the airport that is near it? Do people ever refer to Chicago as ORD? It seems like a lazy or hipster thing to do, but one of my friends who lives in Portland asks all the time if somebody living in "PDX" has something she needs. As if it is a neighborhood. She is kind of a c unt though.

OK, I see where you got this list now. I also see that all these nicknames are based on very little and sometimes nothing, and that they all suck.

Yes, Portland has a ton of roses and a world famous rose garden. Read some of the above posts for the explanation of Rip City, but the term is still used quite a bit all around the city. PDX is cool, that's why people use it. As for Stumptown...it's generally tied to the logging in the area, but actually comes for when the city was first starting to rapidly grow and they cleared large portions of the forest in the city, but left the stumps.

You got me on Little Beirut. I live here and have heard it once or twice, but don't really care to seek out the answer.

It takes more effort to say the three syllables in "PDX" than the two syllables in "Portland", so I can't see that as being lazy. Probably just a weird hipster thing.

Stumptown does indeed reference Portland's period of rapid expansion, during which there were too many tree stumps left over to practically remove. Instead, they whitewashed them all to make them easier for carts/buggies/horses to avoid.
