And just to drive this point home, because so many on here are ignorant, Chris running 1:50 in the AM and 50 min in the PM at 5:30 pace isn't 'fast' for him, but it was destructive (over training).
Solinsky himself stated that he thought he had to train HARDER after running 26:59 to make the jump to medal status at the Olympics - which was a mistake. All he had to do was do what he had been doing, consistently training year after year.
If your goal is to win the WCs, then you have to be willing to go to the well a lot. Yes, if you miss, which is likely, you will have problems, likely injury. But, at that point none of the native-born Americans had medaled in the distances and he was taking a shot. Since then we have had Jenny, Centro, Rupp, Manzano, some top-level but bad luck racing from Uceny, and the world looks a lot different to us in terms of expectations etc.
Your best example - Rupp doesn't go to the well a lot or doesn't do stupid training.
Rupp is the best right now because of consistency (and TUEs - but that's a different topic).

Heck in 2011 when he got 2nd at the USA World trials it sure didn't look like his spade was fading when he just barely lost to Lagat.

He is incapable of taking it easy. That is the root of all his problems. He is very insecure and has to try to prove himself on all his runs.
Soon to be mentioned along with Goucher as one of the guys responsible for the US comeback, but thats about it.

Solinksy sets American record in 10K, runs sub 13 several times, gets 2nd in USAs (beating Rupp) and almost taking down Lagat - Lagat was quoted after as saying he didn't think he'd hold off Solinksy and it was one of the hardest pushes he ever had. And of course qualifying for Worlds.
So, again, how would not even expecting to make the top 3 in the USA 5K champs be even remotely close to being where he was in 2010? I apologize if I missed something.
He did beat Rupp but Rupp had run a 10k the night before.
He still lives in Portland and is coached by Jerry Schumacher.

And he ran 26:59 off of pure fitness because of it. Had he been fully trained he could have gone 26:45 and been in the hunt for a medal as well.
Running fast helps you to run fast. Its not rocket science.

You know nothing about the kind of elite training that leads to results. Running at 100% every day only leads to over training, injury, and the inability to reach potential.

Solinsky beat Rupp, was the first American under 27, ran sub 13 and was seemingly on his way to be the best distance runner in the country.
Sub 27 + 13 and never made an Olympic team by age 28 and has been out for 2 years.
His sub 27 was the tip of the iceberg.

Manzano is not native-born. Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Mexico.

I'm more worried about my boy German. Is he hurt again I hope not. I thought his problems were his college but maybe not.
Makes sense to worry but I think he lacks a base. It ,ay take a year.
