Wah wah. Life isn't fair. If you're not the big dogg like rupp, you're not calling the shots. I don't see any threads about "runner x can't run his 5k now!"....cuz nobody cares.

Rupp's get a cold. That's it.

Rupp is always getting "sick."
That is the problem.
His internal system is out-of-whack. That is why he needs massive-quantities of "special" meds, all to make him better, quicker, faster.
Indoor Allergens
I feel like everyone in Oregon is sick now, so I wouldn't be surprised if Rupp is too...
The real question in my mind is why is David Monti taking pot-shots at Rupp. Did anyone see this tweet from yesterday?

Speaking as an event organizer, one of @Lagat1500's greatest attributes is his reliability. He always gets to the starting line ready to go!
Seems somewhat unprofessional to me.
My hunch is that Galen is injured. These were going too well for him lately. They probably overdid it a little in training.
I bet he tweaked a hamstring doing something stupid.....like 150's on treadmill at 56pace.
This is totally understandable. Rupp has a severe thyroid disorder, so bad that he needs a lot of medication for it. It's no surprise that he's too sick to race, in fact, he probably has had to increase his medication load lately and is worried about the effects of racing while his body is getting used to having new levels of the thyroid drugs in his bloodstream.
Honestly, how can you expect him to race when his thyroid is in such bad shape and he has to take so much medicine for it?
update on Galen:
http://www.letsrun.com/news/2013/02/galen-rupp-not-running-5000m-this-weekend/
His agent and the meet director do not indicate Galen was sick or injured. Sounds like others cancelled and then the decision was to scrap the 5k.
Let's put it this way
The NCAA App gives Bernie's 13'07.15i record as outdoor of
12'58.81
Rupp coud probably run a solo outdoor 5k close to 12'50 nowdays
He's not ducking the record
edited to add :
it's not a big ask for him to run 13'07i solo if he had to
i'd imagine family issues are far more paramount, inferring from various posts

He didn't ask them to cancel the race. Besides, it's the organizer that pays for the travel of the athletes.
Since some of you don't seem to have read the update, this is what his agent says:
“A few weeks ago the 5000m looked great on paper – the organisers did a great job of putting together some of the top names. Then one by one the race kind of fell apart due to athletes cancelling their indoor seasons, getting ill or injured. For the past 10 days the meet organisers were looking for replacements to make it a good race but a lot of the good Kenyan, Ethiopian and Ugandan athletes are concentrating on their cross country trials which are this weekend and next weekend. Several of the better athletes who ran in Karlsruhe, Gent or Dusseldorf don’t have UK visas and there isn’t enough time to get new ones. We lost the second pacemaker last week and on Monday one of the top names cancelled. As the meet is live on BBC it needs to have at least 6-8 runners to make it work. In consultation with the remaining athletes (including Galen) a decision was taken to cancel the event.”
Got an email from someone who exactly knows what happened in this situation, but who knows who these things work.
"Chances are Rupp had some things he expected from the meet that weren't going to happen such as pacers, competitors, etc. and AlSal decidd he didn't want to waste effort."
When you are going for a record, everything has to be right and btw, Rupp has a pretty good record of showing up when he's entered in a race.
Why don't you guys just call Salazar?
also like to add, that unless the birmingham track has been relaid in past dozen+ y, even though kennster ran 4'49 & 12'49wrs on it, it's not a track "friendly" to distance runners
szabo who ran "8'21 non-chinese wr" outdoors in '02, ran 8'32i wr year before
she described the birmingham track as ~
"sapping all the energy out of my legs even though i ran wr - i coud only run 8'32"
( she was chasing an ancient 8'33 from '89 !!! )
it was year before of her 8'21, but she was in similar shape - gold in '00 & 8'24 in '01 in a tactical race
the synthetics are all pretty much the same, but birmingham had likely some poor asphalt/cement to lay it on in those days
you run fast at birmingham, you are damn quicker on a kalsruhe/stuttgart/lieven...
