You're right. I was thinking about this bogus scenario a little differently. I was assuming that a helicopter could in fact fly in space, in which case it would not be a projectile

You CAN fly a helicopter to the Moon. You can fly just about anything to the Moon as long as it'll fit inside a space shuttle, provided it's not too heavy. It can even be a solar powered helicopter.
But you can't tuna fish on the Moon ......

A specially built one has actually landed on Mt Everest. But the normal helicopter's limit is about 24,000 feet.
The only way a helicopter could get into orbit is if it picked up enough speed before the air got to thin and it's momentum carried it into orbit. The problem is there would be no way to steer or maneuver.
In space the only (current) way to move about is to coast, throw reaction mass out the back of your spacecraft, or have an object's gravity pull you to it. Bad news if you haven't planned ahead.
