there are more non running nut jobs out there. There are many distance runners who are quite healthy...mentally and physically. "Ferocity in her eyes...suppressed danger?" Imagine a female writing that about Pre. Subjective at best.
The Silence of Great Distance is the best book I have ever read about women's running.I read it once a year while I was coaching HS girls in the late 90s and early '00s Perhaps now some of you will read it to get an understanding of the demands placed on young impressionable women. Suzy probably has some serious issues and likely would have had them whether she was a librarian or Olympian. I serious doubt SFH's difficulties derive from her days at UWis.
Every coach should want his athletes to have superior power/wight ratios. But it's a mistake to not watch out for eating issues.
A scandal like the ones described at ncst and Wis. can ruin a program. A coaching staff should have supervised meals and have a target weights that are healthy. Questionable behavior shouldn't be tolerated and kids who don't listen should be sent home.
The problem - and I mean THE PROBLEM - for all women is that they have been coddled for far too long. Look at the Lifetime Network - in every movie the husband or boyfriend is the bad guy/abuser and the woman is always portrayed as the victim. Never is the woman the abuser. Women always have to be protected. If a guy did what Suzy Favor Hamilton did, he would be attacked for abandoning his family and young daughter. Yet, I hear no one mentioned how SFH was running around with weirdos while her young daugther alone with no mom. Susan Rice ... she lied and was egregiously incompent about Benghazi - yet when anyone critical about her performance - he is labeled a sexist. Hillary Clinton - wow - she hiding like a baby to prevent explaining her incompentence in the State Dept. and with Libya - she cowering at home so she want have to account for her actions - or lack. And no one taking her to task. She has a fake illness and falls and has fake concussion - and confined to home by so-called fake Doctor's Orders - like a little baby. And no one calling her out. Ben Rothlesberger has a concussion and he immediately trying to get back on field. She has a fake one and it debilitates her for weeks! What a pansy. We need to stop coddling women and let them stand on their own feet!

I'm a female and every team I have been a part of had a handful of insane women. Eating disorders were normal. Had 4 that were seriously anorexic, in the hospital almost dying. Would recover and relapse. Most of them were bi-polar or depressed and on some medication, but would go back and forth in fear it would ruin their running. I remember most breaking down and sobbing uncontrollably after an off workout or race. To be a runner at a high level, I do agree you have to be somewhat of a nut job anyways. It was scarring and made me never want to return to a team again. They rub off on each other too.

Rick Telander totally lies!! The race was not in Bloomington but Indianpolis. Kathy Ormsby did not have to climb any fence. She just ran out the gate down the street a couple hundred meters and jumped off the bridge. Anybody in the stands could have seen her jump if they had been looking. Noted the absence of Fleshman. In fact, Lauren Fleshman is NOT in the category of obsessive/neurotic or worse- distance running elites. She is definitely the exception to the general trend. She is as inwardly reflective as anyone in distance running I've ever met. Grounded.

100% of the people that I have met with an eating disorder always blames society's image of women or teammates or parents or a coach. How about blaming the person that is responsible? You are F-ing crazy.
