I figured you must be under 25, Ummmm.
You weren't even old enough to watch these movies in the 90's.

The 90's (the most overrated film decade) has too many excessivly adored movies to count. Which do you think are the most overrated ones.
1: Dances with Wolves: How did this movie win Best Picture. Boring, sluggish both describe Costner and the movie itself. I can't think a movie harder to get through; only Out of Africa, Benjamin Button, and the movie below come close.
2: English Patient: Elaine has it perfect
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B57bOy2Dzjg3:The Blair Witch Project: Stupid horror fest that was jump started one of the worst kind of movie (found footage horror). It is not scary and it looks exactly like the money spent on it.
4:Independence Day: Blah action fest which was only there for special effects. Everything was poor except for Will Smith and the effects (which now look very dated). Jeff Goldblum never stops in his terrible acting.
5:The Last of the Mohicans: Look past the cinematography and the score, and this movie is just an very average adaption of a fantastic novel.
Also to be considered:
Forrest Gump (long and annoying)
Jurassic Park (just a thriller with poor acting. Has Costner and Goldblum)
Titanic (James Cameron= Most overrated movie maker of all time)
The Bodyguard (Bad movie that included Costner)
Pretty Woman (typical Rom-Com)
I can get on board for some of these, but have to vehemently disagree with others. Independence Day, while not a great film, has many redeeming qualities that don't make it a top overrated movie. Plus, most people acknowledge it for what it is and don't shower it with accolades. A lot of movies mentioned in this thread do not deserve to be here (Jurassic Park, Good Will Hunting, Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, The Bodyguard)
Top 10, In no particular order:
English Patient
Titanic (no movie can live up to that ridiculous hype - especially this average movie)
Clueless
Jerry MaGuire
Dances With Wolves
The Cider House Rules
The Piano
The Sixth Sense
The Blair Witch Project
Shakespeare in Love

The only one I really agree with you on is Blair Witch Project.
Oh, and btw that was Sam Neil in Jurassic Park, not Kevin Costner. And what was "poor" about acting in Jurassic Park?
Of the pictures nominated for the Oscar in the 90's I'd have to go with .....
Braveheart
Independence Day
Jerry Maguire
The bodyguard
Beauty and the Beast
Bugsy
Blair Witch wasn't great, it was interesting and wasn't nominated for an award. Hard to be over rated when you weren't rated.
1. Schindler's List. Liam Neesom was a disaster (should have been Ralph Fiennes in the lead). The film was jammed packed with gratuitous holocaust violence and gore, but was desparately short on character development of any of the victims. The attempts at artistry were ham handed and awkward (red coat on little girl in otherwise black and white movie). Even the theme music was a stereotypical schmaltzie and whinney violin melody written with the usual lack of depth and feeling of John Williams.
2. Pulp Fiction: a few clever scenes of snappy dialogue do not make up for the fact that this was just a bunch of set ups for an adolescent boy's wish list of violence.
3. Malcolm X: Denzel was fabulous, but the movie was really about Spike Lee. He hijacked what could have been a great biopic and turned it into a personal soapbox for his views on race in the US.
4. Forrest Gump: Pure manipulation from beginning to end. The only real character (Jenny) gets killed off for a tear jerker
Ending.
5. Titanic: low hanging fruit.
Not that Jurassic park was a poor movie, I just think that people overate it. While the begining was interesting halfway through it became Jaws on land without the great acting and story. This movie has next to no character development and becomes so predictable. I did enjoy it, 7.5/10,it just angers me when people consider it one of the greatest movies of all time. When I heard some people talk about that it is one of their top 5 movies I was appalled it is not that good. While the special effects can still stand up today, the story can no longer be strong. It has no surprises, the leads are weak, Goldblum is as bad as usual, and the whole idea of killer dinosuars is stupid.

Both movies are enjoyable, but are severely overrated.
big Titanic fan?

Overall I'd probably tend to agree, but it's realllllly close. On any given day I could probably pick one over the other.
Blair Witch Project may be the most over-rated movie of all time, not just of the '90s.
You are correct, Good Fellas = best movie of the 90s. Worst? Traffic. Unwatchable, preachy drivel. Honorable mention: Unbreakable. Shamalamadingdong's best movie by a country mile.
Eyes Wide Shut
American Beauty
Leaving Las Vegas
Especially as that would normally be the sort of film I like. No real motivation was given as to his depression, an how Cage an actor I originally liked won an Osca for just moping around is beyond me
The Piano.
Saw this at the Cinema and again the sort of film I would usually like. It was all style over substance. The characters bore no resemblence to anyone you would meet in real life. Worst of all there was no reason given as to why the lead was mute. The girl was good in it and the only other interesting bit was when he went to cut her finger, a girl sat next to me hid under her coat and did not come out for the rest of the film... maybe that was me!
American Beauty rules.
Yes Leaving Las Vegas almost had me leaving the cinema if it wasn't for naked Elizabeth Shue. Did it have a point to it?
As much as I could dis many of the others listed now, I have to say at the time I enjoyed most of them so I don't think I could honestly call them overrated.
"Dazed and Confused" I sure didn't get it, despite the hoopla.... but maybe it was over my head. Please explain the significance of that one.
"What's eating Gilbert Grape?" is my vote for underrated movie of the 90s
In all honesty, I loved most of these movies!
I would say Blair Witch was probably the worst. But it certainly was creative and I think it was scary to some people. But I was bored.
Pulp Fiction definitely. Every moron who thinks they're unique love quoting scenes from it as if that makes them special. Those scum piss me off

Amen. I'd move this to #1.

This. American Beauty is insipid tripe for simpletons who want to think they're deep. The movie is about as profound and subtle as an episode of the Simpsons.
Goodfellas should have won the Best Picture over Dances with Wolves in 1990. Nobody that sat through that 3 hour Kevin Costner movie I bet ever watched it again but I've probably watched Goodfellas 50 times.
I hated Titanic the first time I saw it but appreciate that movie more and more these days.
Tarantino's movies were bold and original at the time. Resorvour Dogs blew me away the first time. Nowadays it seems pretty stupid.
