I agree with you to a point. I'm in DC and the winds never hit what they were predicting---they never do with these hurricanes. Nothing out my window matched the intensity of a an intense thunderstorm, particularly that dericho event.
Weather donsn't seem to have good analytical models with respect to predicting inland winds from these things.... But, you can't blame the forecasters as they err on a more conservative call.
As predicted, the real damage is from flooding, downed trees, electricity out, etc...not from buildings being smashed to the ground, tornado style.
Here, just southeast of Boston, we got some wind, some rain. Never even lost power.
Actually the models were pretty good with decreasing the winds inland. Forecasters like to hype the worst possibility so people will be scared and prepare.
Checked the news this morning before heading into work and they were still touting 60 mph winds in my area when in fact it's just breezy. I have no idea why they haven't toned down their warnings based on the reality of the situation outside.
Still amazed I didn't have a sleepless night last night listening to the wind howl and the gusts rattle the windows. Kept up by the walls being flexed and the aluminum siding creaking and groaning with leaves, branches and debris pelting the house, the whole time wondering if my gutters are going to ripped from the roof. -- you know the usual stuff when there's 79 mph winds and the center of a hurricane overhead.
It does seem that water damage is the worst of this storm. Talked to my brother who lives in DC area last night, and he said it was nothing...not even as bad as a normal big thunderstorm.
For those in low lying areas though, lots of water damage. It's good that the loss of life has been minimal.
Rockaway and Breezy point got destroyed.

Being at elevation inland, the winds were definitely NOT decreased. We're still getting 50+ gusts and white out conditions.
Agreed, the derecho was much worse in DC.
