Predict my athletes 5k based on 1 x 5k

Okay, I don't have a dog in this fight, so I hope I can be objective.

1. Yes, research (about a half-century old now) has shown that workbouts 3-5 mins long, with rests of similar duration, are best *for improving VO2*. Is anyone disputing that here?

2. The OP supplied a race result/description, added a workout result/description, and ASKED FOR A PREDICTION FOR THE ATHLETE'S TIME. Anyone who's not clear on this could go back and read the OP itself.

3. So PEOPLE *AREN'T* DISPUTING THE WORKOUT *AS A WORKOUT*--they're saying, and I agree, that it's not useful AS A PREDICTOR OF A RACE TIME. How is that not clear???

The point is *not* whether the 6x1000 with ~3min rests is a good workout, or good for this time of the season/year; THE POINT IS THAT, *BY ITSELF*, A WORKOUT WITH RESTS OF THAT LENGTH IS OF LIMITED VALUE AS A PREDICTOR--which is what the thread is supposed to be about.

Does everyone understand now? Sheesh.

You really got some people going, but this is a little over the top.

OP clearly stated that he was looking for a race prediction based on a previous race under less than ideal conditions. How is the rest way too long in a race?

Sure he completed the workout and he hit the paces, but was that workout over his head? How did he feel after the workout? And if he is going to run 16:30 this season, he probably would have been able to do it with or without that workout.

Wow. I didn't realize I'd spark so much "debate".

To answer the previous question, he felt pretty controlled on the 6 x 1k workout. I don't think he would have been able to be so consistent with his splits and still pick up the last one if he wasn't feeling controlled.

We went over to the coast today and ran in a fairly good sized invite. It didn't go too well for us. The guy in question was 12th in the varsity race. The course was only 2.3 miles, so times are kind of irrelevant (I honestly don't remember off the top of my head). I thought we'd do a little better as a team, but I guess getting on the bus at 5 am, riding for 2 1/2 hours, going cold into an unfamiliar course less than 48 hours after a fairly tough workout isn't the optimal method of setting yourself up for a good race.

Nonetheless, it was a good learning experience. Good to get out of our little pond and see some faster competition. 2.5 weeks 'til league finals then another 2.5 weeks until our section meet. Top guy in the section is a 15:46 guy. I think that the rest of the places are up for grabs for my guy and a top 2 placing/trip to state is a very real possibility. I'd put us at No. 3 or 4 right now, but we are improving.

I'm not too sure your objective considering the petty primary school argument of ' I've got nothing to contribute so ill correct grammar'. This isn't a term paper and I'm sure you understood exactly what I wrote.

Now in regards to my original statement did I not originally mention it wasn't great as a predictor for time?

For the benefit of rths, the thread title is: Predict my athletes 5k based on 1 x 5k. Being a pedant when it comes to grammar doesn't necessarily equate to knowledge and comprehension skills, in your case anyway.

i'll give your reading comprehension a 1/10 seeing as how you've somehow failed to understand the WORKOUT that was mentioned.

Humor me. Where abouts in the OPs post did he ask " Is 6x1km a good predictor for 5km time". Perhaps I'm a simpleton but it seems to me he asked what times his athlete could potentially run based on those times provided. Now you went on to say 6x1km with 3min rec is a terrible session to predict time and implied poor knowledge of the sport. He didn't ask whether it was a good session to predict time though lol!!

Perhaps if you had a knowledge of the sport you could provide a useful answer based on the information provided as I'm sure any knowledgeable coach in track and field could. There is sufficient information.

Perhaps stating "6x1km with 3min rec is an awful session" even though it was the question asked is your way of saying I don't know anything about running but ill make an irrelevant comment anyway.

The workout WAS specifically designed to get the athletes running at 5k goals pace, which we had not done at all until that point of the season. The workout WAS NOT designed to be any type of indicator, as I thought I pretty much indicated in the title of the thread.

The fuel for your trolling excellence, which clearly surpassed my trolling mediocrity, was the fact that I included the VO2 max session at all. Most people ask for MORE data when trying to predict someones performance or give advice about workouts. You clearly wanted less data....to focus on one workout of an entire season and use it to show that I know nothing of the coaching trade....the mark of a trolling champion.
