I could break 18 in my mid forties with only a 5:04 mile PR. I only ran 40 mile weeks. My big workouts were 6x800 or 4x1200 at 5:45 pace. I would also do 3 mile tempos at 6:10 or so. Usually one or the other in a given week but sometimes a tempo and an interval in the same week. I would definitely do a 10-13 mi long run every week. Once in a while I would go up to 15 or 17 if I were building up for a half. Make sure you are not training at too fast a pace and def do the LRs of 10-13 at 7:30 to 7:45 pace or so
