malmo (or anyone else),
do you know if luchinni and torres can give up their "nominations"?
as i said above, it seems obvious that lane and bolota have a much better shot at an A std than luchinni and torres (one or both of whom might not race again this summer).
one would think this choice has to be made, if at all, before Sunday's nomination deadline.
I'd hope it would be as "easy" as Broe and Asmeron getting the A in the next 3 weeks. But I defer to someone who knows more...
I think what he was perplexed about (as am I) is that it makes no sense that if Broe gets the "B" he goes alone, but if he gets the A, they both go. I mean, how does that rule make any sense whatsoever?

i don't think so. i don't think asmeron "stays alive" past july 18th because two guys have the B std. this is a new thing this year, it seems silly and confusing. because of torres' time from last summer, even if Bolota and Lane get the A std, they cannot go to the olympics.

That definately makes things more interesting. Gotta love those commentators. They initially stated that Riley has punched his ticket to Athens, as if it's now a forgone conclusion...idiots...
The only way Riley doesn't go is if Broe gets a B (13:25.40) but not the A (13:21.50) AND no other American gets the A.
Interesting, Matt Lane can still get the A and make the team.
It anin't over till it's over.
because A comes before B and not the reverse?
i know it sucks but if you have the A standard you really shouldn't be losing that race. riley knew the situation.
Asmeron needs to wear some normal running shorts and stop showing his sac!
Again, thanks for the clarification...
again, the fact that Hammond, Liquori and their crew had no clue what the rules are and whether Riley was in or not is more evidence that these people are utterly unqualified and should be immediately fired and perhaps thrown off a gondola. you simply cannot be that unprepared. astonishing.

If only one American athlete has the A std, then the US can only send one person. USATF has determined that the most deserving person in that situation is the person who placed highest at the Trials.
What bothers me is the selection criteria for the "nominees" who can now chase the A std. As it stands right now, Bolota and Lane cannot make the olympic team (nor can anyone else besides Broe, Riley, Torres and Luchinni), despite the fact that Torres and Luchinni have roughly a snowball's chance in h*** of running 13:21.
what could happen is that lane and/or bolota run 13:20 in 2 weeks, broe runs 13:23. in that case, who goes to the olympics? answer: just Broe. Even though the US could have sent Riley, Lane and Asmeron.
Stupid.
I hope luchinni and torres do the right thing (and that they are allowed to).

It anin't over till it's over.
malmo, are you sure about this? i'm pretty sure, from previous threads and from the USATF website that the 4 nominees are NOT the top four in the race if there are guys who placed lower with a superior standard (A or B).

Wait a minute, Jorge Torres gets the nod ahead of LAne because Lane doesn't have a "B." Lane can't be nominated.
anyone can refuse to be a nominee in an event pool (say you're gail devers and you don't have any plans to run the 100m, so you don't accept it). i hope torres, at the very least, doesn't accept because he doesn't have a chance and should know it.
Luchini doesn't have a B, therefore his "status" is eqaul to everyone else's, and Torres' "status" (and rank) tips the nominee in favor to him.
A
13:20.50 12 Mebrahtom Keflizighi Nike 8/5 Stockholm
13:21.11 1 Jonathon Riley Nike 4/15 Walnut
B
13:21.85 8 Bob Kennedy Nike 8/2 Heusden
13:23.25 10 Abdi Abdirahman Nike 8/2 Heusden
13:24.17 11 Jorge Torres Colorado 8/2 Heusden
non Qualifier
everyone else
1 Tim Broe adidas 13:27.36
2 Jonathon Riley Nike 13:30.85
3 Bolota Asmerom Nike 13:32.77
4 Matt Lane Nike 13:33.51
5 Mark Menefee Hansons-Broo 13:37.68
6 Matthew Gonzales New Mexico 13:41.25
7 Jorge Torres Reebok 13:41.79
8 Chad Johnson Nike 13:43.24
9 Eric Savoth Nike Farm Team 13:45.16
10 Ahman Dirks Nike 13:46.47
11 Sean Graham Unattached 13:46.79
12 Louis Luchini Nike 13:50.64
well Broe just said he'll go for the standard in London in two weeks
so the prospective pool then is broe, riley, torres and asmerom?
luchinni got the B std of 13:25.40 at Mt SAC when he ran 13:25.19.

RANK
1 Broe
2 Riley
3 Asmerom
7 Torres
STATUS
A Riley
B Torres
none Broe
none Asmeron
IF no one gets the A, Broe misses the B, Riley goes
IF no one gets the A, Broe gets the B, Broe goes.
If anyone else gets the A, they go, in order of RANK at the Trials
so the prospective pool then is broe, riley, torres and luchini?
god i hope one or both of those guys drop out. especially luchini, he has to know he doesn't have a shot. torres doesn't look like he's fit enough anyway. he couldn't get it last year.
