13yr old runs 33:50 for 10k

Well I, for one, think a 33:50 10k for a 13 year old is very good. I must be in the minority here.

Well you, sir, are the loser who actually went back to count and judge which posts were negative just to respond to me.

And I STAND by my assessment that most of the rest of us ALSO think 33:50 is good for a 13 year old. Since he is being compared to some of the best 13 year olds ever, I would go as far as saying that is a GREAT time.

Define 'good'. A 13yo kid in Australia just won his national age-group 3km XC by 20sec, and did 33:30 for a 10km road race (link below). When they had a 1500m relay event two days after the 3km race, a guy he beat by 30sec in the XC came within a second of him in the lead-off leg.

Indeed, a certain amount of base is good, but surely in proportion to your age. What these youngsters are sacrificing is raw speed development. This, along with general strength, plus sharpening technique and form, should be a strong and continuing focus from the beginning. Even, or perhaps especially, if it looks like you will be a better distance runner than sprinter. You need to train your relative weakness, rather than turn yourself into a plodding endurance machine. There are many years to steadily gain more endurance. Lydiard understood this.

Sounds like one of the Garretson (sp?) kids. Hopefully that 10K isn't his high water mark.

great job .Hope he does well but the numbers are not on his side.Most never get any faster if not slower in high school .A very small number make it past that.One in 50 are still running at all by there 20s.Its seems most greats start in high school.They dont make great strides till the jr year.Its very hard to keep it going but i wish him luck.I was like him and still run very well at 39 but thats very hard to do .

Of course we can not give you 10 names of people who peaked before high school without extensive research because they have been forgotten... I hope he does not peak, 33:50 is very impressive, I can think of several kids however from my area that were much better then me in high school that trained way too much when they were younger and never did anything in college...

If a 9:34 3k converts to a 9:10 2-mile, then yes. BTW, a 9:10 2-mile by a 13 year-old that isn't even 5' tall would be more impressive than Bekele breaking 26 minutes in the 10k.

Very fast time. However, it might not be National Record. When my son was 13 he went 35:23 which we considered fast, but at that time there was a family in Southern California named Garritson who had a number or highly trained kids running and would run awar from him. James or Jared might have run 33 or faster at that time. I am not sure.[/quote]

I just read an article in Runner's World about that family (because the 2 boys were attacked by Pit Bulls); the kids ran 100 miles every week and one of the daughters ran a 2:50 marathon at the age of 11.

Of course you cannot, because they do not exist. Sammy W started serious training at age 8 (a late start by Kenyan standards) and after 6 years of training nearly broke 14 for 5000 at age 14. Yeah, he never got better, that training really hurt him, didn't it? Geb started training at age 5 running 10K to and from school and by age 14 had run almost 30000 miles and ran zero races and did zero workouts. He definitely trained too much, huh? You can't train too much, you can do too much anaerobic interval training. Bekele only ran half as much as Geb so only had 15000 lifetime accumulated miles by age 14 and that training really hurt him didn't it?

Why do you think you can't develop both? You can, and should. To suggest that aerobic development and speed development cannot be complementary is silly.

I think the Garritson's had about 10 kids and they all peaked before high school. I would add my son to that list. 35:23 10k at 13 and a 1:25:?? half at 12. But then he decided to play baseball in high school. He enjoyed the team atmosphere and as an adult has returned to running for a healthy workout.

He is a very good soccer player as well, which is where a lot of his running strength comes from. However, he is known to run anywhere between 6-10 miles in the morning before school, before going to soccer practice in the afternoon. As a side note, he did not run at all this summer. Started running again right around the 2nd week of August. Sister is almost 6 feet tall, and brother about 6'2". He's barely 5 feet which seems like he is going to grow quite a bit over the next couple of years. We'll see how his body responds to that big of a growth spurt.
