What could the top 100/200 guys run 400-Marathon and what could the top Marathon guys run for 800-10k?

I primarily sprint. Im not in the same class as those guys at the top. 10.8-11.0et. shape, i tried doing a 5k and was able to get 20 minutes 46 seconds, on a track was using Nike Bowerman racers. I did the last 200 in around 31s.

Komen (who is a hell of a lot faster than Buster over 1500, 1609.34, 3000 and 5000) did a 800TT and only ran 1:47.3 and he was flat out. A week later he ran 7:20 for the 3K!

he obviously was in 3'30 or better shape at the time

if he coudn't go better than 1'47.3, no way geb ever went 1'45 ( & kennster himself has said his 800 ability is 1'48 ) otherwise he wouda made mincemeat of komen's 3'29.4 & at worst 3'27

Komen was an anomaly though. Despite his blazing fast 1500/3k/5k times he was pretty slow in terms of sprinting speed. He almost never had a kick, he could just roll out 59-61's until the cows came home. I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bekele and Geb were significantly faster over a flat out 400m than Komen despite being 5k/10k guys.

you might have semblance of an argument if komen had had a poor 1500 of say 3'31/3'32, but he went 3'29

it is not possible to run 3'29 without some significant 400 speed

the reason komen lost most of his 5ks to geb was that he did all the donkey work allowing geb to draft all the way round, save energy & kick off him - reverse the tactics & it's likely komen may have won the sprint

incidentally it didn't work in '96 when komen broke him in the last lap in zurich

komen's 400 speed is under-rated :

kennster coud roll out 61s all day long for 5k at his peak, but mever went quicker than 3'32 & he had 3 good shots at it & never looked better than 3'30/3'31

komen to go 3'29 may have had better 400 speed than kennster, but he wasn't messing around with 12'50/12'55 races in '96/'97 to show it

The best marathoners marathoners are definitely 4:05 or faster for the mile, 1:55 would be a cakewalk for any of them. I bet most would be 1:52 or faster, especially for the younger ones.

The problem with this sort of comparison is that it is likely that you are not as specialized for the 100 as a professional. They would probably have difficulty breaking 20 minutes too.

I agree but i reckon Bolt could break 20 minutes with some conditioning, would it effect his sprints? maybe could he break 18 minutes probably not if he did it would seriously effect his sprint times.

I've seen high school kids run 22/50 200/400 that could run a 17 minute 5k xc. So I say top sprinters could run 15-16 minutes 5k. I say top sprinter could run 2hr40 to 2hr50 min marathons.

Bolt could run a 15 to 16 minutes 5k. Come on I've seen high school sprinters run 17 minute 5k. most top level sprinter could easy run 16 minute 5k

No chance Ryan Hall could break 2:00 in the 800.

So just wondering, with Mo having run his ~12.9 on The Superstars, if anyone changes their opinions on how fast these guys can sprint? Obviously Mo is much faster than most marathoners, and yet still gets a slow time for his 100. Also Ventolin, what do you think on the top marathoners sprinting speed?
