I'm currently a 4:02 miler and I would have to look up how fast I ran a half marathon 2 years ago. If I don't remember, then surely it's possible that Paul Ryan doesnt either
A former UK Conservative Party Chief of Staff under William Hague (I've forgotten his name) ran a 3:47 mile.
I checked his old campaign web sites on archive.org for any mention of a marathon, and didn't find one.
It's gotta be either in Wisconsin, near Miami University (Ohio) or DC.
Maybe it just wasn't a big deal for him. Believe it or not, there are people who do some running but don't make it the focus of their lives.
I go to church with a guy who is presently in his late 50's and ran several marathons in the low 2:40's when he was in his late 20's or early 30's. He told me he did not know what his PR was, but that it was "a little over 2:40." He knew that he had made several unsuccessful attempts to break 2:40, but did not recall what exactly his PR actually was. The fastest time I could find listed for him was 2:43:17, though they obviously didn't post all race results online back in the mid 1980's.

He must be a liar then. Everybody who has run a marathon knows the best time to the second!

It was on vacation in Hawaii one year. He ran into Gerry the Jogger on the beach one day and they decided to do a long run the next day. Gerry got lost on the run and ended up taking Ryan on his "marathon loop". Probably is where the 2:50 something came from.

Of course he is a liar. What kind of runner does not remember his PR? The interesting thing about the interview is that there is no attempt to draw out the details or challenge his claims. This is par for the course among "journalists" today. They crave "access" to important people so they know not to ask any probing nor potentially embarassing questions. Sick.
A little bit of that Republican anger. I love it. What people are sniffing out here is that old Paul may have a fibbing problem. I, for one, am curious to see this played out. He played up his bad back as if someone was going to ask him to run a marathon on the spot. With all of the (human) resources here at LR this will be sniffed out.
