I'm not sure how you think news works, but that's pretty much the definition of news... to report it as it happens. Why should NBCs competitors not report what NBC refused to?

It's a live event, man. If you want to blame anyone for spoiling the Olympics, blame NBC for their decision to run on tape delay.

IOC have released a statement supporting NBC.

Meanwhile, in the face of this, NBC doesn't give a rat's ass about over-educated, under-employed 20-something track geeks upset that the network didn't show the steeple in primetime, complete with split-screen camera angles and a 10-minute pre-race analysis. NBC doesn't care because, while over-educated, under-employed 20-something track geeks may infest this board, they are a less-than-microscopic element of the audience that NBC is trying to target.

4 years ago, all of you little pukes would have killed to have what NBC is giving you now. Virtually free live access to the games. Now, suddenly it's not enough for you.

It's this damn younger generation 19-34 - the "entitlement" generation. You think NBC, the Olympics, letsrun.com etc owes you something because you watch. You think your little #NBCFAIL or demands really mean somthing. No wonder a lot of you are unemployed losers who still live with mom and dad.

Don't know why you'd assume that 19-34 year olds are the ones who are complaining. One would only have a problem with NBC's coverage if they were too clueless about computers to watch things online. Seems more likely that the old people who can't figure out how to watch a live stream of the event are the ones who would be complaining.

Nonsense. (1) NBC blocks non-cable subscribers from live coverage. Why should I have to subscribe to 6mos cable ($400-$600)just to watch a 2-week event? I would pay for an online package like the Universal Sports 2011 Worlds in Daegu. NBC is misusing an idealistic world event for its crass commercial purposes while driving people to use non-authorized means to view the games.

(2) Track and field is sustained by the athletes, coaches, fans, and recreational runners that buy gear, enter races, and go out and support the countless events that lead up to the Olympics. NBC is doing nothing except obstructing the sport and conditioning people to expect WWF type entertainment and scripted outcomes.

(3) NBC's anchors and announcers are doing a poor job - this is related to their strategy of centering their coverage on telegenic media stars/anchors who don't know the sports they are covering (some exceptions)

I know. It's so unfair when companies only offer their services to people who pay for their services.

You can watch the olympics online for 4 hours with a temporary pass

The post about the Triple Cast is exactly right. Sad when 1992 was the best olympic coverage. If they had a track channel the whole time, all would be acceptable, but they choose not to. To say the alternative of watching the live streaming online is like saying I should build a windmill to get power to my house. I have NBC, cable and a DVR. Why can I not record the events I wanted,and watch them when I want? As for the product, don't get me started on the incompetence of Tom Hammond. Makes me long for Larry Rosson...

The IOC would be best served by having networks bid on each sport they want. Then, channels could focus on their sport, compete against each other for ratings, etc.

It took 10 minutes to get FREE high resolution pictures 1,000,000,000 miles from Mars, yet London is only a few thousand miles away and not one FREE high resolution picture has been shown in weeks.

I have cable TV, but I still can't watch it online. That's a different story. Anyway, while NBC may be making a profit, this does not mean that they are doing the Olympics or their viewers any kind of service. Even if you're one of those people who measure everything by profit, then, how do you know whether a different model wouldn't have resulted in more profit? I think people are tuning in to see the games, and, stay watching hoping that, maybe, just maybe, Bob Costas will shut up long enough to actually see some games. What we may be seeing is how much people love the Olympics in spite of NBC's coverage. They're not viewing because of it. And, certainly, if they covered the games differently, they probably wouldn't lose those low information viewers, and, would probably gain a lot of people like us who have abandoned NBC for other media.

i don't have cable and I watched it live online at nbcolympics.com, complete with british anouncers. just use the internet at someone else's house who has cable and go on nbcolympics and you can watch anything anywhere on your computer.

You can watch any event live online. I don't see why people are complaining. If you don't have cable, ask a friend if you can use their login name/password. This is probably the best coverage offered for any Olympics.

I do think it is hilarious that people are defending NBC for trying to maximize their audience and profits by giving people what they want. Do I need to point out that NBC has been in last place of the major four networks for years now? SO clearly NBC executives have NO CLUE what people want to watch. The fact that no one watches them outside of sports makes that abundantly clear.

So tell me again why I should trust their judgement in what people want to watch and when they want to watch them?

Although I will point out that NBC DID infact run the steeplechase. They did it at 1am though. I watched it live of course online, but I DID get a kick out of something Dwight Stones said (amazing, I know). When Kemboi jumped up on Benebbad after the race, Stones said something along the lines of "he should be careful, Benebbad might punch him."
