Solinsky is the only pro runner that I root against, for many of the reasons outlined in his post.

4x400m depending on the leg doesnt have to deal with heavy traffic

first leg is in lanes

second leg is in lanes for the first hundredish meters then break, in a single file.

third and fourth are the same. at most you have one person at your side and maybe, MAYBE, another in front of you.

you cant argue as a sprinter you know what its like to run in heavy traffic as you simply dont. besides, how many people actually fall in a 4x400m

Ah the Heather Dorniden defense. I've also fallen on the track. In the last race of my collegiate career I bit it over the final wather barrier of a Steeplechase. Yeah, that sucked ballsack. I got up and I finished that race - and damn near with a PR, too. I did not finish the aforementioned race because of hitting the rail and rolling my ankle and due to the fact that I landed on the infield - an offense that can get a runner DQed. Different scenarios.

You're a complete and total idiot if you think Solinsky should risk his career for one race when he is not even fit. And yes, he can easily risk his career by running if not fully healed. Hell, that's probably why Gay has been so slow to come back, because he tried to come back too early and re-injured the groin. Hundreds of runners have gotten on that injury cycle by trying to come back too soon. Just ask Alan Webb.

So Geezer, let me get this straight...you think that is Solinsky runs the trails just to participate because it is the OT's it just matters that he tries because you have to TRY. But from reading his interviews he makes it clear that he will not be ready to race at all, you're saying that you would not be the first person on the boards to rip him a new one for running sub par and "robbing" someone else of a spot to be able to participate in the OT's?

I suspect your obsession with Solinsky is so deeply rooted that you will find any angle to rip into him. Same goes for last year if he would have gone to Daegu to participate you would have been first to say "I told you so, he is a spineless wimp to just jog through and not qualify for the finals robbing Bumbi from going. What does he do? He knows that he can not run when his hamstring has torn 90% off his pelvis. Pretty stand up if you ask me.

Again you try and compare sprinting to distance running. No comparison available that works because Gay may have a similar injury (I'm not sure so I can't say for sure) but you mention that he will participate at OT's. That is possible because if you can sprint fast you don't need the amount of consistent training to get fit and race ready as one needs for distance running. Solinsky has been training at far from the level needed to compete. Even if you could start training 100% today that is not enough time to be ready to get A standard fit and top 3 fit. This goes back to my original argument, you would jump all over him for taking a spot from someone else to just experience the OT's. Once you reach a certain level (which you clearly never have) Being in the OT's is not the ultimate experience, it turns into a necessary evil, a prelim, a hurdle to clear. You act like you know the circumstances of the decisions of the past year, but you have no idea. You are just this cynical old man that thought he was good, but never reached that level of greatness that you thought,

Very few professional athletes care to run trials just for the 'fun and glory'. There is really no point in racing the trials in terrible shape and with a injury problem. Theres no glory in participating like that.

This is a typical American problem. You guys have so many athletes that in the end you only care about Olympics or else it would be hysteria every year with the many World Championship medals, but the fact is, in track, a World Championship medal is basically the same as an olympics medal. If you cannot understand this you truly have something to learn about track.

He has a career, but he is injured. He is dealing with the injury to be able to make a comeback the best way possible. That does not involve finishing last in the trials.

And Solinsky did puss out but thats part of the attitude thing. You can't puss out in a sprint. If Bolt ever pussed out he'd be running like 11.0.

Its that attitude and what SG doesn't understand is how a distance person can not have it.

Well there is a bigger difference between Sprinting and Distance than just fast twitch and slow twitch. There's also the mentality and also the attitude.

Sprint Geezer probably doesn't understand the distance mentality. I can say having done distance that distance is entirely passive aggressive from beginning until about 50m before the finish. You get too passionate you'll get eaten alive in a distance race by people no where near your talent.

The opposite is true at sprinting. You're balls to the wall from the gun trying to kill the track with your feet. You even think about the word passive and you've lost. You even think and you've lost, just that simple.

Both are completely different attitudes and training approaches.

SG, I think you're missing a couple of things here.

Solinsky appears to have what may be a career-ending injury, the cause of which was apparently not running-related. He seems to be in the same situation as Tyson, both of whom are hoping to be able to salvage their career after surgery. Tyson was planning to run a time trial early this month, then run one race at Clermont before the OT: Didn't happen, so is he now Tysoncrap? Not in my opinion.

I fear that Solinsky is the latest victim of the real crap discussed on this site, and that is high mileage crap. He wasn't always on the sidelines, injured, making excuses. When he ran 26:59 and 12:55, he didn't even know how many miles he was running: He actually had to go through his log and add it up. Once he started doing more and more miles (up to 130 mpw or something at least if I can believe what has been posted here) instead of training to win, what did he get? Nothing. Injuries. Excuses. FAIL. And there's a whole bunch of promising athletes who got tied up with that drug, and it destroyed them all.

I see highmileagecrap around this board frequently. He's a loser who accomplishes nothing in his career, except writing big numbers in his log book, and running mediocre marathons.

The D1/pro athletes and coaches that actually win medals know better.

But, saying Solinsky "should" do this and "should" do that with a messed-up hamstring because Sprint Geezer says so? I don't get that.

Check out Bernard King's knee rehab. He came back when HE said he was ready. Check out Iowa basketball great Ronnie Lester's (who?) knee rehab. Maybe he came back before he was ready and maybe it shortened and diminished his NBA career. Similar story for William Gates of "Hoop Dreams" fame. If Solinsky says he ain't ready, who are we to judge?

I never said he should go as hard as he can. If he could make the team with less, he should do less. If not, then yes, he should go as hard as he can--or he should at least TRY to go as hard as he can. The POS isn't even TRYING.

The 4x400 exchange zone can get heated. I've knocked down people in the exchange zone, and have in turn been knocked down myself, especially indoors.

And in any case, "knowing what it is like to run in heavy traffic" is TOTALLY IRRELEVANT. Knowing how NOT to quit is what is at issue.
