I would choose pushing myself in practice every day (with the boys team) and chasing national record times and Olympic Trials berths over running way ahead of a girls pack and running relays any day.
It is unfortunate that her decision to train harder stopped her from competing on relays and led to a possible falling out, but she seems like a great kid with ambitious dreams who is set to chase them.
As someone else said, let's just sit back and enjoy her running.

I don't think you know much about the Bronxville girls or boys team, coaching or training, which is not about chasing people during workouts. I don't think the split is just about relays. Mary has made steady progress from an impressive start in 7th grade, most of it with Mitchell. I think if you knew the facts you would have her stick with Mitchell and work it out. I like Mary and enjoy watching her success, these people are all my neighbors so I just think it is too bad.

No I wouldn't, because the facts include Mary and the family's desire to be coached elsewhere. If she wants that (and it's a fact) why would I have her stick with Mitchell?
Conditions were partly cloudy and cool. The CW DMR was a race between Reid and the Tennessee leg with PSU being a few meters back when they all got the baton. Reid ran a smart race, staying on the UT anchor's shoulder through 1200m and then started to move with 400 to go, constantly checking her shoulder before motoring away at 200m. There wasn't a need for her to run super fast, only to win.
All of this is fact, not to take away from Cain's race, which was phenomenal. My 5:09 miler was in awe of the way she just sat and pounced.

Too bad the family has decided they know what's best for the little prodigy. Being part of a team is something to be encouraged, at some point she might have to work as part of a team, she should learn how to deal with it.
For the record, it's not where you start that matters, it's where you finish. It ain't over yet, let's see where this ends up.
Same old story. Too much, too soon. Girl will be burned out by her freshman year in college, and will revert to running 5:00 for 1500.

She is not being loaded with mileage or interval workouts and has improved every year since 7th grade by a TON.
Seems like she is doing smart training (lower mileage, working on speed development) under smart coaches.
Wish her the best and look forward to the future.
Jim Mitchell's career speaks for itself but he can use the humility which Mary's decision forced on him.
My bad in all of this - it's the same frickin' school, she's just training with the Boys (and their coaches?)?! I don't necessarily agree with this as I have seen bad things come from chasing boys in HS workouts, but it is the same HS and there is a problem? Why is there a girls program (with a male coach) and a boys program at the same school? (I thought that was only for College - and that is a problem there in my opinion for some developing runners).
I agree that it is her decision and ALL the coaches at the school need to get on the same page. Either the girls coach should get some humility or the guys coaches need to explain why they are coaching a girl. Sounds like it's messed up and egos are now involved. The problem at the HS level, is that it should be about participation and serious competition isn't for everyone. Too many HS coaches living through their athletes, instead of helping athletes who want and need their help - too often ignored for the prestige of coaching the stars (like Mary here).
I thought all of the hulabaloo was about her ditching the HS coach for a club coach, not being coached at the same school!! It should be her decision who coaches her at that school, or the girls coach should decide why he is coaching at all.

I heard last spring at outdoor nationals that her parents were pissed off that she had to run the 4 x 8 on Firday and then she came back sat. night and got beat in the mile, it was too much for them to see their little precious get beaten. So, this year they said eff the team stuff, "It's all about Mary"
I'm actually really glad that she's not running in relays anymore because she can showcase her individual phenomenal talents. She's a special runner that America gets to see maybe once every 20-30 years. She should focus on, like she says, "PR'ing every meet". That's not going to happen if she's running a 4x800 two hours prior. The end.

Funny how those "special" runners that America sees only every 20 - 30 years seem to crop up every HS season.
If she truly is special then the focus should not be on "PR'ing" every meet but on long term development. For someone of her talent, HS honors should be nice to have's but the real focus should be on a long term career.
please inform me the last time a sophomore girl ran under 4:40 for a FULL MILE... oh wait, never? Also 4:39.25 is the junior class national record.. she ran 4:39.28 in APRIL.. Pretty sure we haven't seen a female with her talent level since.. Mary Decker?? Jordan Hasay comes close but I'm pretty sure her 4:14.50 1500 will get dusted before the end of the season.
Mary Cain has two more years to break national high school records. If her priority now is to get to the Trails, I think Mary Cain has got it right.
