Going back to the original question, are there any Kenyans that step on the barriers? I don't know of any, but maybe there are a couple. Either way, I love how this thread has turned into an attempt to bash one of the more helpful posters on this site.

The original question wasn't whether Kenyans step on barriers. It was whether a guy who can't break 10 should. The Kenyans do not step barriers unless they are desperate. Going back to Hislop, he very accurately pointed out that at slower 70 seconds per 400 you have no efficiency hurdling. Since he coaches very good steeplers, he recommends they accelerate to this pace or better to each hurdle. A 10+ (even much over 9)this is suicide. Unless you'd throw in 28 random sprints throughout a race, you don't want to sprint at the barriers from 80 to 70 second pace each time. This is how you coach a guy to a high school or division II All American. If you coach an elite like this, you are an idiot. Likewise, if you have the same recommendations for a 10:20 guy as an 8:20 guy, you are equally stupid. Or you can just be an extremely helpful poster by ignoring physics and ask obnoxious questions.

He's a huge influence on my philosophy. Weber guys I beat on the flat would kick my ass in the steeple. He taught me a lot.

It should be pointed out that malmo agreed that slower runners should step on barriers less than two years ago

Oh, no. Malmo has been awakened again.

Medal Detector has obviously worked with steeplers of a VARIETY of abilities for some time, whereas malmo has coached...nobody.

I wouldn't ask Lebron James to take a grade seven basketball team to the city finals, I'd ask a guy who had coached dozens of grade 7 basketball teams.

Malmo consistently brags that his half marathon time was much quicker than 10:20 steeple pace, so WTF does he know about improving at that level.

NOT THAT MALMO WOULD GET IT, but if you're running 1:15 per lap, no you should not necessarily hurdle the barriers. No disrespect to the OP, who is working hard and that's all that matters to me, but 10:25 is SLOW running to jump a 36-inch barrier.

Why would it not?

It improves the odds of knowing what you are doing, "having done it".

I am sure malmo was not born steepling low 8s. I would bet that he remembers the path he took to get-where-he-got.

So while your advise would have the positive effect of making sure bad steeplers don't reproduce, the intended recipients probably won't appreciate it.

Practice is always a good idea but it should be more than a few minutes a week. If you're going to go over the barriers like Bambi you might as well put your foot on the damn thing.

So far, Malmo hasn't offered any coaching advice in this thread. He's only asked for the names of some "All-Americans".

What the hell is your problem? Are you that angry about not being able to name an elite steepler who stepped on the barriers?

Try again. Read more slowly if it helps.

The trajectory of this thread is amazing. My own opinion of the original question is; even a 10:20 steepler wants to run 10:19 and hurdling is a faster method, when possible. Yes you might have to accelerate to the barrier, but the nature of the race is just that. A constant disruption of stride. It's why some people can do well and other better/faster runners cannot.

Not trying to be mean, but if you have poor hurdle form and poor flexibility, why are you running the steeple? This is kind of like asking what the best shotput form is for a guy with poor strength. Seems to me that changing events might be a better plan than changing your hurdle technique.
