I always listen to music when I RUN. It doesn't help me run faster. I run fast (or slow, on necessary days) regardless.
And I run WITH traffic. It's illegal to run against traffic where I live.
So BOOM, haters.
I always listen to music when I run. I run on the treadmill, trails, roads, bike paths, and the track.
It doesn't have anything to do with how fast or slow I run. It does make running more enjoyable though.
I do like to listen to music when racing. That way I don't have to listen to the other runners annoying huffing and puffing when they are futily trying to keep up with me as I am blowing by them late in the race.
How does running with a Garmin make you jogger? I mean even Ryan Hall uses one.

the end.
This is correct. Only slow runners listen to music, sissies, girls etc.

The reason you don't hear me over your "Frankie Goes to Hollywood" mix is because I've already finished, cooled down, and showered.
No, i never listen to music when i run. Listening to music should really be a much more engaging activity, and simply having it on for background noise doesn't do it justice. That being said, if i were to listen to something while running it would probably be the 11/29/97 Jim.
I do a lot of tempo and LT work on the roads with a Garmin - I have a playlist of uptempo songs just for those workouts. I do think it gets me to run faster. And it is more fun.
I was thinking about this during my long run today, and I listen to music when it's easy runs but on any and all workouts I don't like having my music it's more of a distraction (good and bad) that isn't needed while working out
I always listen to something while I run (with the exception of races). Usually it is a podcast, but sometimes music. I don't think it makes me run faster, on a normal day I am not trying to run fast anyways.
So running fast is abnormal for you?

Impossible. Everyone knows that all the 14 minute 5K runners on hear don't run with music or Garmins. If this is not you, please... you are encouraged not to post. This is called letsrun, and Garmin and music makes you a jogger. Just ask all the really fast guys on here. They preach it like gospel.
I'm going to go for my jog now, with music and a Garmin.
I know a 13:48/4:02 guy who runs with music for any run that is not an interval workout.
I used to run to Death Metal, but stopped when I figured out it was causing me to push the pace. My running is controlled without it. I think I'll revisit it tonight and see how it works.
I run with music because I get 15% more endurance:
Only when going on 15+ mile runs while training for a marathon. A 20 mile long run alone is boring without it.
I rarely listen to music when I run, but when I do, it is XX

and banjos
When I was in HS, I did, but it was just the XC team singing the popular songs of the day

Oh shit. This post makes me happy in so many ways.
First of all, I traveled with Phish during that year, and the second I saw your post, I wondered if you were talking about Runaway Jim during that particular show in MA. Am I right?
Second, and I am not trying to fight with you because I agree with your point, but when I get a new album or a new show, sometimes I will take it out on a run to listen to it. I actually feel like I hear the music much better when I am running.
So to answer the OP, I do not listen to music when I run, but sometimes I will run while listening to music.
For clarity, that is not a clever way of saying I run to music. I actually do not run to music, but I will go out for ANOTHER unplanned run to listen to an album...
Sunday I ran with Pete Yorn on Sunday and it was good. Monday I ran with Deicide and it wasn't good. Today I won't run with anyone and I hope it is good.
